In vetoing the resolution put forth by Republican Commissioner Shelley Taub (Bloomfield Township), Patterson is going against his own party, with all 16 Republicans voting in favor and all nine Democrats voting against it.

"If they had realized at the time how it was going to be construed, I think they would have looked at it differently," he said.

Patterson said he talked to Republicans about revisiting the resolution, but they ran out of time to do it. So he issued the rare veto instead. He said it is only his third veto in 20 years.

In a release, he cited increased jobs and the fact that the state constitution allows for the creation of new bridges with Canada.
    .....

"Halifax has opened up a deep-water port, which means they're going to try to capture a lot of the trade coming out of China and Asia," said Patterson. "They're going to ship that out of either the bridge in Detroit or over in Buffalo, New York. I want the trade to come this way."
