Hookers again? Liberal talk radio boss busted with prostitute...

Oh, and he's Debbie Stabenow's husband too.

    The Detroit Free Press reports:

Police went to the hotel after a detective working on Internet-based prostitution at hotels in the city came across a solicitation for sex on a Web site, backdoor.com. Plainclothes detectives went to the hotel and set up a surveillance and watched Athans drive up, go inside and then leave about 15 minutes later.

Athans is a radio producer who's spent the past several years trying to launch liberal talk shows that could counter popular conservative radio programming.

Before starting his current firm TalkUSA Radio in 2006, Athans was the head of syndicated programming at Air America, the liberal network that declared bankruptcy that year. TalkUSA launched one syndicated talk show last year.

Athans has strong ties to Democratic Party officials and liberal activists; Sen. Hillary Clinton publicly acknowledged him during her speech in Detroit last month.

Is there something in the water?  You know, between Spitzer, Mr. Athans here and the Governor's new insurance bureaucrat Butch Hollowell I'm starting to notice a perverse sorta pattern.

I don't very much care for Senator Stabenow or her politics but I sincerely wish her the best during what must now be one of the most difficult periods of her life.

i too find this hilarious and pathetic. on a personal note, though, i don't wish that sort of humiliation on the spouse of anyone--be they dem, repub, lib, conservative, whatever.

i guess the silver lining, if any exists, is that at least he wasn't soliciting his own gender in an airport bathroom (not that there's anything wrong with that, as seinfeld would say).

    my choice of words.

"Sad" is a little more accurate.  When you're considering the spouse in these situations that sort of heartbreak kinda erases party lines for me.

The real outrage here is that Michigan law enforcement agencies waste precious and scarce resources on something as absurd and outdated as a "prostitution sting."

If your response is that they make money on these busts, then that's even more of an outrage. The purpose of criminal law is not to generate revenue for government. If it were, the criminal justice system would be nothing but an extortion ring. Which may not be too far from the truth, but it's nothing to feel warm and fuzzy about.

If cops don't want to be viewed as just another species of gangster, I recommend they get out of the "prostitution sting" biz-ness.

According to the Free Press, they'd only been married since 2003.  I despise the way Stabenow votes but I certainly hope she and her husband are able to resolve this.  It had to have been extremely painful to find this out, and I hope she learned about it before the News did.

I do think she was the victim of the type of social mentality liberals encourage and have pushed for over 40 years.  The generation of "free sex and love" isn't learning that sex is NEVER free, love is a commitment and thousands of aborted babies, foster care children and those who don't even know their parentage are paying the price.

the libs "peace and free love" crowd are the only ones getting the "stuff" polished, if you know what i mean. we've never seen this sort of thing happen to conservative white males or any salt-of-the-earth community and church leaders.

Is that some would ignore the rule of law on this. Perhaps not a big deal in this situation, especially if you have situation ethics. But to not see that this can have a connection with misuse of funds, STD's, blackmail... Especially in the Detroit area where there is a great problem with these things and it's a serious health matter. To say nothing of the fact that the police shouldn't be selective as to which law they are going to enforce. How about all of them. There's that saying, if you can't do the time...

You do make a great point on the reduced charge.

I too am agnostic on the usage of law enforcement to try and corral citizens into the proper moral circle.  Perhaps suspecting the prostitute was a minor made the sting more legitimate...I don't know the details.

Hypothetically, what do you suppose would have happened to Athans had he not been driving on a suspended license?  Would he have gotten off without a scratch, or would he have been toting around the sex-offender label the rest of his life?

Perhaps all patrons of prostitution should only do so on suspended licenses.  Dirty laundry and all that.

Sorry to disagree with those who feel"sad" for the Senator. As a Liberal Democrat and elected official representing that party, she has fostered, promoted and embraced a perverted do anything if it feels good lifestyle that Liberals hold dear. The recent revelations of Liberal Democrat trysts prove these people can't be trusted to run their own lives let alone be trusted with anything in government. Breaking the law, cheating on spouses, failure to pay taxes and accepting bribes are the normal behavior for Liberals. Though they claim it is Republicans that have a culture of corruption it is indeed themselves that are the most corrupt both legally and morally. I don't feel sorry a bit for the Senator, may be the racist Reverand Wright is correct when he says the chickens are coming home to roost. But it seems they are all landing in the Democrats coop.
