    The Detroit City Council Posse

    The freep: Security level for Detroit City Council exceeds other cities. Is the MSM just noticing this NOW??? I mean - this isn't exactly current news to those of us in the Detroit metro area. Why report it now? I don't really know, other than the MSM might be doing this so that some time later they can say "look! We've criticized democrats too! We're not biased!" Since Monica Conyers has dug herself a hole (and, like our president, thinks she can keep digging to get herself out), she would be a lame duck target to go after. In any case, here's an excerpt from the story:

    Detroit's council president gets a full-time officer from the time he or she leaves the house in the morning until returning at night. Eleven cities surveyed by the Free Press with populations and government bodies similar in size to Detroit's limit security for their members mostly to a presence during council meetings. None have a designated unit like the Detroit council's, which includes nine sworn, armed officers.
    How do you justify such an expense? Easy:
    Detroit Councilwoman Barbara-Rose Collins said Detroit is a dangerous city, and council members need the unit, especially when they travel to community meetings at night.
    They play the Detroit card! The very thing they accuse us suburbanites of doing! But... isn't that racist? Well now, lets look down the memory hole. Here's a NYT article from 2007 where the city defends itself against those that say it is dangerous:
    The city put out a news release containing criticism of the study from the president of the American Society of Criminology, and explaining that most shootings in Detroit are drug-related and not random. It also points out that some major cities, like Chicago and Minneapolis, were left out of the rankings because they do not report their crime data to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where CQ Press gets the figures it uses.
    Got that? Detroit isn't dangerous per se, it's just disrespected! Kwame must be turning over in his - well - wherever he is. Here's what he said about comments such as those of Councilwoman Barbara-Rose Collins:
    `We have battled negative perceptions for more than 40 years and the spirit of Detroiters will not be broken by a designation from a group that misused statistics to draw unfounded conclusions about the safety of our city for the purpose of profit.' --Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick
    So I guess we have a bit of a conundrum here, no? Maybe we should just go with Kwame. I mean, he's so smart that he hooked himself up with a $300,000 job at Compuware while still wearing his prison garments all the while that same company is laying off a bunch of employees. And he did this with no experience in the private sector whatsoever. So he should know, right?

    In any case, really dilapidated cities that have crime rates like Detroit surely protect their council members all day too, don't they? Like Washington D.C. maybe? Well, no. No they don't (and stop calling me 'Shirley!'). According to the freep:

    Not even Washington, D.C., sensitive to terrorism-related concerns, nor San Francisco -- where a mayor and member of the city board were assassinated at City Hall in the 1970s -- provide protection to their legislative bodies at the level Detroit does.
    As for Conyers, without her security detail, how will she get her son chauffeured to that expensive private school in the suburbs? Think of the children. THE CHILDREN!!! We'll see if the Council is able to keep their indentured servants in the face of the looming $300 million budget. Then again, Conyers has bigger fish to fry these days. (see here, here and here)

    All that being said, we might all need a security detail should the Governor's proposed budget pass resulting in the release 4,000+ felons back onto the streets to save a few bucks. Yikes!!!

    Detroit is like little brother (none / 0) (#2)
    by WadeHM on Sat Feb 14, 2009 at 11:02:28 PM EST
    See, you don't understand the whole issue here, let me explain it this way;

    If I catch you beating on my little brother, I'm gonna pick back on you and beat you up. But hey, if you catch me beating on my little brother that is okay because he is my little brother and I can do or say what I want and you can't interfere, it's a family thing you know.

    And yes, I am being sarcastic.
