Ray Basham, D-Taylor, Knows the Legislature's Job

Mr. Basham, when having his nose rubbed in the fact that Michigan's relatively new anti-smoking law for bars and restaurants has reduced charity gaming revenues by nearly 25%, responded with this bit of wisdom:
"I would say to them, 'What are you doing to market to nonsmokers?'" said Basham, who pushed for years to get Michigan to adopt the ban. "The job of the Legislature is to protect public health, not to create a business plan for establishments that don't have a business plan."
Many bars and restaurants that have been profitable for decades are now showing similar decreases in revenues. (Oddly, they seemed to have successful business plans for all those years.)

Sadly, other people have been affected too. Employees at many of these establishments have seen their hours cut back as a result of the shortfall.

As it turns out, this is not Mr. Basham's fault either. He might say to them, What are you doing to make some money? Maybe you should get a second job or go find some cans for deposit money. After all, it is the job of the legislature to protect your health even though you chose specifically to work in an establishment that caters to smokers, and it is not our job to create a survival plan for employees that don't have a survival plan. Unless, of course, you need some food stamps...

Just so you know, it is neither Mr. Basham's fault nor that of his political brethren that nearly a million Michiganders have lost their jobs in the past ten years, that hundreds of companies have closed up shop or fled the state, that the unemployment rate here has rivaled the nation's highest for most of the last decade, and that whole industries are struggling for lack of a nurturing business climate.

After all, it is the job of the legislature to pursue the greater good for Michigan society, not to create a survival plan for businesses that have difficulty adapting to all the horse crap legislation that fascist morons seem to pass out of Lansing these days with the quivering speed of Chris Matthews' leg at an Obama speaking engagement.

With people like Ray Basham in charge it is a shock that anyone in Michigan still has a job. But if they didn't, it wouldn't be his fault.

I heard Basham on the Frank Beckman WJR radio program a few weeks back. He's a big proponent (naturally) of the DRIC bridge to be built by MDOT, the Canadians, and taxpayer dollars---to creat good prevailing wage union jobs don't you know. He knew about Jim Blanchard's $600 per hour consulting job on the project, didn't know what he'd billed for as a consulatant and also wasn't aware of Mr. Granhol.....er, uh, Mulhern's involvement in that. He did know that an evil private venture was trying to build a span with his own money and that just shouldn't be allowed.

I once wrote him a letter congratulating him on his "glorious victory" on the smoking issue and suggested that he employ his gestapo tendencies to force all eating establishments to install doors that open out so patrons wouldn't have to put their hands on the door handles to exit the rest rooms, they could shoulder their way out. He never responded although I heard from sources he's thinking about forcing the entities to hire people to stand in the restrooms and make sure everybody washes their hands ala TSA gropers....at prevailing union wages.

    there's a great opportunity here (none / 0) (#2)

The GOP, now in charge of both Houses and the Mansion, could overturn the smoking ban.

That would be a great win for liberty.

    btw, I don't smoke...pot either.

You can point to the statistics all day long about reductions of revenues to business. The economic / employment climate has changed dramatically since the law was passed.
"(Oddly, they seemed to have successful business plans for all those years.)" I'm thinking that people didn't just frequent businesses only to smoke; they can do that anywhere else, (for now). They can go outside, and enjoy their product. This type of legislation has been imposed in several other states for many years and I can personally attest that when I was visiting, business didn't suffer.
I would attribute falling revenues to overall fewer disposable dollars for people to spend and some smokers are making choices to enjoy their tobacco product that does create a dependency rather than frequent business establishments for eating and drinking or for any other non-necessity.
It's very unfortunate that a liberty has been lost, but the few that were intolerant of the majority of non-smokers brought this upon us all and were able to motivate non-smokers to persuade enough of their fellow citizens to urge their representatives to use the heavy hand of government legislation. Why couldn't that 20 percent of people who are smokers in a restaurant have stepped out to smoke, even occasionally? Only if they could contain their gasses. It can be changed within our culture but for now, no civility, no consideration exists in measure and we need that desperately in our society now or we are doomed to more of these incremental government interventions.
