    Does Detroit Need Immigration?

Mayor Michael Bloomberg, not content with imposing a nanny state on New York City, has weighed in with his solution to Detroit's problems.

Having read reports of Detroit's dramatic population loss (about 25% over the past decade), Bloomberg's solution is simple.  Immigration!

Mayor Bloomberg: Detroit Needs Final Solution
Snyder sees immigrants as a key to state's economy

Governor Snyder apparently thinks this is a swell idea, too.

Neither Bloomberg nor Snyder seem to have addressed the most basic question.  Why is Detroit losing population?  They make it sound as if it were some unknowable force of nature causing Detroit to lose people.

In fact, people are fleeing Detroit because of high crime, social disfunction, high taxes, and low human capital.  Anyone who can afford to leave does.

Bloomberg and Snyder seem not to understand that the whole point of immigration is to move someplace better than where you are now.  Why would anyone in their right mind choose Detroit as the place to start a business?  Why didn't Bloomberg and Snyder move their businesses to Detroit if it is so full of opportunity?

Instead, what Bloomberg and Snyder seem to want for Detroit is colonization, where more advanced outsiders share the blessings of civilization with the benighted native population.  But colonization can only work when the colonists have political control.  Imperialist Europeans are in short supply these days, anyways.

The flipside to Snyder's belief that immigration is the key to turning around Michigan's economy is apparently that existing Michigan residents are a bunch of lazy bums.  While that may be true in Detroit, it is a slander against Michiganders generally.

The reason for Michigan's economic depression is dysfunctional political structures (both government and unions).  Some of Snyder's other initiatives are positive reforms, but so far they have mostly been marginal changes, with tax reform being the big exception.

It is true that some immigrants come to America, start businesses, and create jobs.  You know what those immigrants have in common?  They aren't from the Third World.  The three examples Snyder cites were Dutch, Armenian, and Canadian.  Michiganders who oppose more immigration aren't upset about Canadian immigration (well, other than Granholm).

Meanwhile, most of America's immigrants continue to come from the Third World, particularly Latin American, particularly Mexico.  Why didn't Snyder cite all the big Mexican-founded corporations in Michigan?  Wait, there aren't any?

If immigration is truly the answer... (none / 0) (#1)

...then the obvious question here is why aren't legal immigrants already moving to Detroit?

Detroit has had problems with illegal aliens, especially in the S.W. Detroit side for decades.

They even have the audacity to stage very public protests against ICE arrests of illegals.

But I can tell you for a fact that legal immigrants aren't stupid. There is a reason why they avoid Detroit like the plague.

If people like Gov Snyder and Mayor Bloomberg need a lesson in why that is, I will be more than happy to take them on a tour of what's left of Detroit...under one condition.

They will both need to go alone, absolutely NO state police escort nor security detail of any kind is allowable. No shadowing from a distance either. If you want to see the REAL City of Detroit, raw and unfiltered they'll need to do it alone. Not on some carefully planned and staged photo-op.

If either (or both) of them have the integrity to go, we will see burned out and vandalized businesses and storefronts. We will go into neighborhoods with one or two homes still occupied and large swaths of weed-chocked fields with abandoned and dilapidated structures dotting the adjacent lots which used to be homes with families living there. We will visit rundown and decaying factories, well, what's left of them. We will go past closed and decaying schools that have been reclaimed by the environment and vandals. We will visit large abandoned buildings in the downtown area with broken windows destroyed interiors. We will also visit areas that have mountains of trash dumped in streets and fields which have been lying there for years.

Two additional points: I don't recommend carrying valuables of any kind and I should point out that I will not be held liable in any way for their safety. They will have to be responsible for themselves in the same city that they are asking legal immigrants to move into.

After my day-long, (mostly) foot tour of the city, it will be interesting to see if their opinion has changed.

The offer is there if they have the courage to go.

What detroit needs more than anything is investment.  Unless these immigrants happen to show up in the city with huge amounts of capital to invest, their impact will be neutral to negative.

For the life of me, I don't understand what world the pro-illegals see when they talk about Mexican and other third world immigrants coming here and making "investments." Third world immigrants have no interest in coming here and bettering their lot other than latching onto the government teat and sucking the benefits dry. This goes on for generation after generation. Studies show that literacy and education rates are flat even among 2nd and 3rd generation Hispanic immigrants. The LAST thing Michigan needs is more people who take more from the system than they put in. We've got PLENTY of those folks already.

    End of story.

...timing for this to pop into ye 'ol inbox.

"UNFORTUNATELY, I have first-hand experience on how illegal aliens negatively affect the citizens that live in this country. When I was laid off from my last job, I looked everywhere for work. Each time I passed a construction site or saw a truck with a company logo on the side, I stopped and asked if they had any positions open. Every reply was the same: `We have all the help we need.' The `help' was always illegal aliens, working for lower wages and not burdened by things such as workers' compensation, taxes, or wages above the minimum wage. I tried for two months, every day, and it sickened me that I eventually had to collect unemployment.

No other country ignores their border and stands beside as non-citizens flood into their country to suck money from any source they can find, at the detriment of citizens. What are we doing to this once great country? Why do we allow this to happen and stand idly by, doing nothing?"

    -Jonathan Gerhard, North Carolina

Amazing to think that Governor Snyder and the Republican Majority Legislature knowingly allows damn near $1 Billion U.S. Dollars of state taxpayers money a year go into the hands of illegal aliens.

Is the current crop of MI-GOP elected class completely indistinguishable from the Neocommunist MDP?  Well, for now, at least the MI-GOP only subsidizes those elected MDP legislators Districts with higher taxes that are pushing workers comp for illegals.
