  • Your New Scoop Site

    Welcome to Scoop!

To help you figure things out, there is a Scoop Admin Guide which can hopefully answer most of your questions.

    Some tips:

    • Most of the layout is changed in "Blocks", found in the admin tools menu
    • Features can be turned on and off, and configured, in "Site Controls" in the admin tools menu
    • Stories have an "edit" link right beside the "Full Story" link on an index page, and right beside the "Post a Comment" link on the full story page. They can also be edited by clicking the story title in the "Story List" admin tool
    • Boxes are what allow you to write new features for Scoop; they require a knowledge of the perl programming language to work with effectively, although you can often make small changes without knowing much perl. If you would like a feature added but cannot program it yourself, ScoopHost does custom Scoop programming as one of its services.
    • If you aren't sure where to look for a particular feature or piece of display, try the "Search Admin Tools" link in the admin tools menu.

    The Power Of The Purse

Dear congressman, keep your damned finger off my chest.

Dr Benishek, you may not have realized it, but the minute that fat digit put its pressure on my breastbone and the words "We don't control the spending" came out, you lost a hell of a lot of respect and support from this concerned (and informed) citizen.  I have thought long and hard on how to broach this subject since our convention discussion.  Could it be that you do not understand your role as a congressman, and the powers vested in you and the house of representatives?  Perhaps you still do not understand that the power of the purse is yours, but Article I, Section 9, Clause 7 is clear.

"No Money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in Consequence of Appropriations made by Law; and a regular Statement and Account of the Receipts and Expenditures of all public Money shall be published from time to time."

MY own opinions notwithstanding, there are other more scholarly types who would agree; congress CAN stop Obamacare, NSA, the IRS, HUD, EPA etc., and there is little the president can do. Heritage puts it this way:
"The Appropriations Clause is the cornerstone of Congress's "power of the purse." It assigns to Congress the role of final arbiter of the use of public funds. The source of Congress's power to spend derives from Article I, Section 8, Clause 1. The Appropriations Clause provides Congress with a mechanism to control or to limit spending by the federal government. The Framers chose the particular language of limitation, not authorization, for the first part of the clause and placed it in Section 9 of Article I, along with other restrictions on governmental actions to limit, most notably, executive action.

The language is clear enough, but there is more. Go below the fold.

I thought this was an interesting way for us to make sense of an ongoing problem with fuel costs.

A little Tim Burton-ish, but not too bad.

After hearing the commercials (Yes advertising DOES work) I checked it out.  Hopefully it helps us understand a little.

A Message To Our Legislators - Beware False Choices

US Senate Candidate BAD For Michigan Jobs

Once in a while we need to be reminded that the lefties HATE plant food.

Badly enough to risk Michigan manufacturing jobs as I have pointed out before:

"Its a sure bet Michigan jobs will go away in certain parts of the upper peninsula, and given the backhanded way in which the current white house occupiers pee where they eat, it is likely not an isolated concern.¹ A billion here, a billion there.  Hardly any pressure on the working stiffs when those costs are passed along.

    Right?"

    Right.

Congress had already done its snow job pre-2010 election however. And today, President Obama will unveil his plan to bypass Congress to force a radical climate change plan which will have devastating ramifications for Michiganders.

Democrat Gary Peters (as with many others) worked to help elect Barack Obama, and as a Congressman, bears his own responsibility for setting the liberal enviro-whacko policy agenda that will destroy jobs, raise energy costs, and hurt working families in states like Michigan. Peters has been a loyal supporter of President Obama's liberal agenda, voting with him nearly 90% of the time, including on extreme climate change measures that would hurt Michigan's economy. Peters "proudly" supports the egregiously costly Cap and Trade legislation that work destroy jobs and raise taxes on middle class families and workers.

    Finished below the fold.

Democrats, Dirty Drawers, & Gary Peters

Have you ever taken your socks off after three days use, and put them back in the drawer unwashed to be used again at a later date?

    NO?  Me either.

It just happens to be the analogy (well ONE of them) that comes to mind with what appears to be Michigan Democrat's pick for the US senate seat that is being vacated by Carl Levin in 2014.  Gary Peters is one of those cats that have been around for too long, with policy desires that stink to high heaven, and will be hauled out for even higher levels of destructive office occupation when they have nothing better to offer.

And they really don't. Have. Any. Better. Oh..Whats that smell?

MEET MICHIGAN DEM'S #1 RECRUIT For US SENATE
    - He supports Cap & Trade.

There is nothing like a made up global crisis to provide for a cronyism scheme that is enforced by government to instill confidence in a free people, hmm?  His vote for the The job killing Waxman-Markey Bill; The "American Clean Energy And Security Act Of 2009" cleared the house 219-212.  Had it passed the senate, it would have mandated changes in the way we live our lives, eventually putting controls on when and HOW we could use energy without paying severe penalties.  In fact, if taken to the extremes, the air you breathe could have actually been taxed under that bill.

Take a deep breath.  There is more.

The effect on industry would have been even more draconian, effectively putting the EPA in charge of operational elements of all industry, adding regulatory expense and killing jobs.  A 20% mandate on renewable energy built in to the bill would have made it nearly impossible for energy producers to keep costs at a level that promotes local (U.S.A.) manufacturing and jobs. More jobs would flee to other nations that have yet to strangle their industrial base with such unrealistic legislation.

    More smelly socks below.

    Obama's Lickspittle Lackeys

While Dick Durbin the senior senator for Illinois uses the Obama administration's EPA to beat up on Ludington's SS Badger, costing Michigan jobs, Michigan Senators Stabenow, and Levin sit idly by and mind their place.

The SS Badger, a coal fired ferry has just received its last reprieve from the Obama administration and a deal brokered between the EPA with the Justice department and the ferry company.  But still it must replace its engines in two years or be done.  In the mean time restrictions have been added so that the hammer of government is felt and appreciated.  Coal fired, is the line that crosses the political hairs of president Obama, who's EPA has directed the greatest assault on energy production and other use of the fossil fuel. This administration has been gunning for the up to 900 jobs (200 directly and 700 indirectly) affected by this recent development. In a January 2008 Interview, Obama said:

"Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. Even regardless of what I say about whether coal is good or bad. Because I'm capping greenhouse gases, coal power plants, you know, natural gas, you name it -- whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, uh, they would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that money on to consumers."

And he is making good on his promise.

The decision to allow the ferry the small window of continued operation is not good enough for Durbin however, who (with nary a peep in opposition from Michigan's US Senators) would like to see those jobs lost permanently.

"The SS Badger, the filthiest ship on the Great Lakes, has been given two more years to dump hundreds of tons of dangerous coal ash into Lake Michigan .. The millions of people who live, work and play in and around this beautiful Lake should be outraged that this filthy ship will continue to operate."

.. To the Lake Michigan Carferry Service which has a lengthy history of seeking loopholes and political fixes to avoid cleaning up their spewing vessel, I have four words: Stop Badgering our lake!"

Says the guy who blocked some fixes we would have had for another environmental (and more pressing) issue; the Asian carp threat.
