I'm not saying Whitbeck's not an effective chief judge -- he did a lot to reduce the delays in that court, and as an attorney, my hat's off to him. But I would not characterize what he did as streamlining. For one thing, they added a large number of contract attorneys to cut down on the time the cases sit in what's termed the "warehouse." I'm not quibbling with that; the contract attorneys were highly effective, and they didn't cost much -- about $25 per hour, I'm told. Trying finding legal work at that price!

Unfortunately, Judge Whitbeck eliminated the contract attorney program because of budget cuts. That, more than the number of judges, may lead to delays.

Novi, unlike you and Dickerson, I'm not particularly interested in the Chief Justice's motivation if in fact the numbers support cutting judgeships. I hear far too many stories about judges who are off the bench by mid-day or who call colleagues offering to take on some work because they can't stay busy.

And as far as cutting the state cars because of media pressure, what elected official hasn't acted with an eye to media opinion? And would you rather still be paying for the state cars?

Doesn't have much of a problem with overspending on useless things, too.

At least someone's finally doing something.  And it's not the Governor.  Let's just tax our way to prosperity!
