    What you describe is just a focus on social conservatism over fiscal conservatism.  Ideally I like to have both in a candidate, but they often focus on one over the other.  I guess if you choose to look at it in a somewhat cynical light, you might see that as pandering to the Christians.  I tend to look at the same situation and see people simply standing up for what they believe in.  

    I don't think that a focus on social issues necessarily conflicts with trying to reach out to the liberal population.  To downplay your stance on social issues to attract the support of other groups, now that would be pandering.
