    Raise the curtain.

But it could also lead to unforeseen results. For instance, if there were to be a runoff this year and the runoff were open, two things would happen. First of all, Bernero would have more time then the Republican winner to prepare for the campaign, giving him an advantage. Second of all, there's no guarantee that the Democrats wouldn't show up for the runoff, which could have might major effect on both the gubernatorial runoff (Snyder still would have won, especially since he courted an impressive 37% plurality in a five candidate race) and more importantly, the down-ticket races.

I personally would change the primary from being open to being semi-open. That way, Democrats and Republicans could not interfere in each other's primaries, but it would still be possible to engage swing voters.

Another option would be to have a closed primary and a runoff, but allow voters to declare their party at the voting booth during the primary. This way, the actual primary would still be effectively open, but if the Republican party has a runoff, then those who voted in the Democratic primary couldn't interfere and vice versa.
