" ... decided months ago by the few that control the party apparatus."

And how do the elites keep this control? Primarily because almost nobody else shows up to take it away from them. In every voting precinct in this state, you can become a precinct delegate merely by signing up to put your name on the ballot. In nearly every region, being on the ballot and getting at least one vote is an automatic shoe-in to be elected - there is rarely much competition. The precinct delegates are the ones who vote on who the Republican party decision makers at both the county and state level will be. Since the local establishment power brokers always make sure their friends and followers sign up, they keep re-electing themselves by default. It wouldn't take much, just a few dozen people in every congressional district, to provide a winning margin to change that. Sadly, lots of fierce "conservatives" will sit for hours at a keyboard typing invective about how unfair it all is, but won't bother to actually get out of the house twice a year and actually do something about it. The deadline for filing as a precinct delegate is May 15. How many fire-breathing patriots will put out that much effort?
