    Welcome to Scoop!

To help you figure things out, there is a Scoop Admin Guide which can hopefully answer most of your questions.

    Some tips:

    • Most of the layout is changed in "Blocks", found in the admin tools menu
    • Features can be turned on and off, and configured, in "Site Controls" in the admin tools menu
    • Stories have an "edit" link right beside the "Full Story" link on an index page, and right beside the "Post a Comment" link on the full story page. They can also be edited by clicking the story title in the "Story List" admin tool
    • Boxes are what allow you to write new features for Scoop; they require a knowledge of the perl programming language to work with effectively, although you can often make small changes without knowing much perl. If you would like a feature added but cannot program it yourself, ScoopHost does custom Scoop programming as one of its services.
    • If you aren't sure where to look for a particular feature or piece of display, try the "Search Admin Tools" link in the admin tools menu.

    This Is Our Chance

You may recall that, a couple of days ago, I mentioned the initial Dave Agema endorsement list.  I'd like to point out that not only has that list expanded considerably, but that expansion includes one very high-profile "get" that ought to, in my opinion, qualify as a major indicator of the intentions of the tea party insurgency for the Republican Party apparatus.

A Message To Our Legislators - Beware False Choices

Let no one say all we do is kvetch.  Positive steps forward will be recognized as such.

Washington, DC- Friday, Congressman Walberg issued the following statement after voting against H.R. 2055, the Conference Report to fund the federal government for the rest of the fiscal year.

"It's positive that Congress reduced discretionary spending for the second year in a row, the first time since World War II, but with the magnitude of our fiscal challenges, this appropriations bill did not go far enough in reducing federal government spending," commented Congressman Walberg following the vote.

Thank you for your vote Representative Walberg.  As you must now realize allowing the debt to increase will only make your job and the jobs of all American citizens harder in the years to come.  Please continue to hold the line, and demonstrate the difference between the fiscally sane conservative Republican route, and the socially progressive fiscally insane Democrat rout of our constitutional government.

And while you are at it pull along a few more.

Reps Amash, Huizenga and McCotter joined Walberg in opposition to this funding resolution which passed 296-121 on the 16th.

This year's conference incorporated numerous events, including addresses and appearances by Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, Texas Governor Rick Perry, Congressmen Thad McCotter, and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus.

    Cap Now CUT Now

Its pretty hard to stay away from the national issues sometimes.

There is the inability of our leadership to just say "forget about it" when their opponents suggest lifting caps, and spending more of our children's soon to be taxed heavily again inheritances.  There is a weakness when it comes to doing the right thing like throwing out a few babies with bathwater.  There is a real lack of courage coming from our Republicans IMO.

But I am not yet giving up.

Sure, I would like to see the cap held. No more! Stop! Cease!  But in the spirit of "compromise" the house gave a little. In fact, the bill sent through would have still allowed a minimum of $2.5 trillion increase in the debt, adding both principle and of course the expected financing measures.

And the senate said nah, not good enough.

So frankly, to heck with them. Its time that Michigan's congressional delegation simply takes a stand. One that is solidly for NO increase in the debt. None. Nada.

    Making The President A King

By Kevin Rex Heine, Section News

Allow the President to invade a neighboring nation whenever he shall deem it necessary to repel an invasion, and you allow him to do so whenever he may choose to say he deems it necessary for such purpose, and you allow him to make war at pleasure.  Study to see if you can fix any limit to his power in this respect, after having given him so much as you propose.  If today he should choose to say he thinks it necessary to invade Canada to prevent the British from invading us, how could you stop him?  You may say to him, - "I see no probability of the British invading us;" but he will say to you, "Be silent: I see it, if you don't."

To provision of the Constitution giving the war making power to Congress was dictated, as I understand it, by the following reasons: Kings had always been involving and impoverishing their people in wars, pretending generally, if not always, that the good of the people was the object.  This our convention understood to be the most oppressive of all kingly oppressions, and they resolved to so frame the Constitution that no one man should hold the power of bringing this oppression upon us.  But your view destroys the whole matter, and places our President where kings have always stood.

The above quote is from a letter written by Abraham Lincoln, while serving in the United States Congress (representing Illinois' 7th District), to his friend and law-partner William H. Herndon on 15 February 1848.  The purpose of the quote, and indeed much of the letter, was that Lincoln was defending his Spot Resolutions and his position opposing the Mexican-American War.

Article 1, Section 8 of the United States Constitution clearly specifies that the power to declare war is reserved to Congress only.  While the President is indeed the Commander-in-Chief of the U. S. Armed Forces, he does not have the authority to order the military into an offensive engagement without Congress' consent.

But that's about to change . . . and God help us all if this stands.

    Amash On Congress

Introduced by Tina Dupont of the West Michigan Tea Party Patriots at the 2011 MiCPAC, Justin Amash discusses his early experiences in Washington.  Amash also offers a candid view of the U.S. Congress that might raise eyebrows, but to also might offer a great deal of explanation as to why it has been so dysfunctional for so many years.

Disappointment alert:  You may not feel more confident in the legislative process after this video.

We are fortunate to have Congressman Amash as a representative of Michigan.  We would be more fortunate if his fellow Michigan delegates would follow his lead in challenging the way things are done in DC.
