  • Your New Scoop Site

    Welcome to Scoop!

To help you figure things out, there is a Scoop Admin Guide which can hopefully answer most of your questions.

    Some tips:

    • Most of the layout is changed in "Blocks", found in the admin tools menu
    • Features can be turned on and off, and configured, in "Site Controls" in the admin tools menu
    • Stories have an "edit" link right beside the "Full Story" link on an index page, and right beside the "Post a Comment" link on the full story page. They can also be edited by clicking the story title in the "Story List" admin tool
    • Boxes are what allow you to write new features for Scoop; they require a knowledge of the perl programming language to work with effectively, although you can often make small changes without knowing much perl. If you would like a feature added but cannot program it yourself, ScoopHost does custom Scoop programming as one of its services.
    • If you aren't sure where to look for a particular feature or piece of display, try the "Search Admin Tools" link in the admin tools menu.

    Oh Great, More Corn Ethanol

Nextgen ethanol might very well become a viable component of an energy cocktail that helps solve tomorrow's energy problems.  Today it is not, and its forced consumption by Americans under the guise of beneficial environmentalism and oil independence are great leaps in logic that border on fraud.  There simply isn't enough corn adaptable acreage in America to significantly impact our oil importation, and purported substantive environmental benefits are becoming less rosy by the day.

Wow, who could have possibly guessed that when government busybodies shoved their emotional noses into an economic equation in which they had no expertise or business, that the unfortunate results of their intrusion might be counter to their own arguments for implementation?

cross posted at a resistant Rougblog

I would have thought, errantly as it turns out, that at least one member of our esteemed Michigan Senate would have considered getting back to basics in education when looking at the crushed state of our economy and the embarrassing condition of our largest public school district.

Alas, not a peep. Maybe later, but not on this particular vote.

Instead the Senate passed by a unanimous 37-0 tally, a revision to the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act. This is the act that, among other things, encouraged children to monitor the air pressure of school bus tires, to clean the coils of refrigerators and freezers, to caulk around and place plastic on windows, and to lower water heater temperatures by one degree all in the pursuit of an enlightened "Green" rating.

After-gym showers got uncomfortably cold after each member of Mrs. Smith's overcrowded 3rd grade class took a crack at the heater's dial.

I have been following a story that has been ongoing here in Rogers City and have posted parts to the story on this blog.  Starting with Part 1, I began chronologically detailing what has transpired so far in this small under-served town.  Between the local and nation-wide environmentalists and the concerned citizenry, it has proved to be very entertaining, enlightening and dramatic.

The Proposed Coal-Fired Power Plant in Rogers City, MI Part 7

Let's remember the names  Byron Delong and Tom Harkleroad.  They are the two members of both CEI and the County Planning Commission earlier in the story.  By May, 2008 only Delong was still a member of both.  Delong was also the man who, in March of 2008, made it clear during a Planning Commission meeting that their should be a public forum to discuss the addition of biomass to the special use permit before the commission issues an amended permit.  That meeting was also attended by Tom Karas, (Michigan Energy Alternatives)  and Jim Dulzo, (Michigan Land Institute) environmentalist buddies from the other side of the state.   Now, let me be clear, the environmental movement had representatives from three groups.  One serving on the board, and the other two pushing for a public forum.  The one on the board suggested the forum be held in May.

It was around this time I was alarmed to read a report by Judy Pasternak of the Los Angeles Times titled, "Global warming has a new battleground: coal plants," in the April 14th issue of the paper.  I will link to it with one proviso, it no longer includes the best part of the report.  Here is the titled story, with the first nine paragraphs removed.
The first nine paragraphs appeared in the report the day I printed it out, 4/14/08.  Here is some of what they said:
