    it's not about business suffering (none / 0) (#7)
by Ed Burley on Sun Nov 28, 2010 at 12:59:59 PM EST
it's about LIBERTY. Again, were I a business owner, I'd like to determine whether or not my establishment would allow smoking. Personally, I think it's damn good business to not have smoking, but isn't that for me to decide, not Lansing.

Here in TC, we have a microbrewery that was always smoke free. It's business didn't suffer either way, but drew in a lot of non-smokers who liked the atmosphere (we could breathe a little easier). Those who wanted to smoke stepped outside. Other bars and microbreweries existed where smoking was welcome. Anyone who didn't mind it, or who smoked could go to those establishments. Everyone was happy.

Now, no one has the right to offer that freedom (except Indian Casinos and Cigar Shops). It's stupid. Damn stupid.

    I'll Bite (none / 0) (#8)

What part of the "economic / employment climate has changed dramatically" since May 1st?  The economy in Michigan has been in the dumper for a number of years.

And, I don't believe that people only go to bars only to smoke...if that was the impression that I left, I miscommunicated.

This type of legislation has been imposed in other states but the only legitimate comparison that can be made is one that is made shortly after the law's implementation.  With all due respect, a person cannot wander into an out of state bar and suggest accurately that nothing has changed.

For the record, being a non-smoker, I also prefer a non-smoking bar and I too blame obnoxious smokers some of this problem.  However, with people like Ray Basham in office I doubt that any amount of courtesy on the part of smokers would have stalled his march into the business of the private sector.
