Monica Conyers goes to school... errr... gets schooled

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Friday morning fights.  This morning we have a battle for the ages.  Brains versus brawn.  Age versus youth.  Decades of experience versus precocious curiosity.  A contrast in styles for the ages.  A sitting Detroit City Councilwoman and wife of a United States Congressman versus a girl barely in her teens.

So for, well, me, in attendance and the millioooooooooohhhh, ok, thousands, reading around the world... ladies and gentlemen.... LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLEEEEEEEE!

Alright, so it wasn't actually much of a fight.

If you're not from the metro Detroit area or haven't otherwise seen the coverage of Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers' battle with thirteen year old Kierra Bell, well, you're missing out.

It all started innocently enough when Conyers lost her mind during a City Council meeting and started behaving like one of the regulars on that liberal Michigan blog, making things personal and calling names.  After all, that's the easy thing to do when you can't win an argument on the merits.

In this particular instance, upset apparently with Roberts Rules of Order (ironically, since only moments before she'd been citing them to prove a point) she launched into a name calling diatribe against the council president Ken Cockrel, Jr., ultimately insulting the man's appearance by calling him "Shrek."  You know, the big green troll guy from those animated movies.

Tough act to follow, right?  Not for John Conyers' wife.  No longer satisfied with treating adults badly she started picking on school children... one young lady in particular who confronted Conyers about her behavior in front of a Detroit News camera.

Ms. Bell suggested to Mrs. Conyers that name-calling is something "a second grader would do."  Conyers contorted her face, cut off the youngster and tried to turn the question back around.  When Bell answered her she was immediately cut off, mid sentence, complete with a hand in the air and a finger being pointed.

    It's awesome.

Now Conyers is back, insisting that she wasn't battling kids at all.

And on that we agree.  From where I'm sitting Kierra Bell pretty well mopped the floor with the Congressman's wife in the span of about thirty seconds.  The only person who doesn't seem to realize it is Monica Conyers.

Of course there's a lesson to be learned here, too... when it comes to debate and political discourse it's always better to keep it above the board.  Once you descend into personal attacks and vitriol, you've already lost.  If you're not careful there might be a thirteen year old just waiting to put you in your place while the whole world's watching.

And big ups to Kierra Bell.  Kind of kid that makes you feel a little bit better about the future of Detroit.  Let's hope the "adults" like Monica Conyers grow up to be just like her.

    Mopped the floor?!? (none / 0) (#1)

How 'bout stomped on like a narc at a biker rally?

Seeing stories like this, as well as the very well written letter by the high school student in the freep several weeks ago (the link has since been removed) calling for kilpatrick's resignation from office, the City of Detroit will be in good hand with the next generation.

Now, how much of a City of Detroit will be left for them when they get older is another story...

Kierra Bell for City Council (none / 0) (#2)

Apparently, Kierra Bell is more mature and more deserving to sit on the City Council than Monica Conyers.

Conyers did not get the point... (none / 0) (#4)

the point the girl was making, you are an adult and you have a choice to act like one. Conyers did a poor job of handling that. Bet she won't do something like that again without preparing herself for the unexpected.

Hopefully, Ms. Bell has learned that not all grown ups are adults.

    Conyers Hasn't Learned (none / 0) (#6)

Unfortunately, Monica Conyers won't learn a damn thing from this experience.  She is nothing more than a thug and bully who happens to be a woman that is married to a Congressman.  Remember when she brought a gun to the council meeting?  Remember that she got involved in a bar fight, albeit before she was voted onto the city council?

It would be so cool if Nick could interview Ms. Kierra Bell. It would be a great article. It would be supportive of a great moral attitude.  It would be supportive of Ms. Bell specifically and she deserves all the recognition we can get her. She must have wonderful parents too. I'll bet she even picks her friends wisely. What a brave young lady.

Advice for Ms. Kierra Bell: Move (none / 0) (#8)
by Angry White Male on Sat May 03, 2008 at 08:36:53 AM EST
The virtue you are said to possess will not be appreciated in this city. Life is too short to spend it cleaning cesspits with a spoon. Go elsewhere and make a good life for yourself.

Same advice to the other 750,000 souls left in this benighted city, except I fear that most of them are too far gone to take it or benefit if they did.

Ms. Bell's attitude and behavior (especially as it is diametrically opposed to that of Ms. Conyers's) is a breath of fresh air and a great sign of hope for the people of the city of Detroit. It indicates that poor, unethical and boorish behavior is not automatically accepted, simply because it is uttered by a person of power. Ms. Bell is a perfect example of the tired old, liberal phrase, "speaking truth to power", and I am so very proud of her for her aplomb and her reasoned rebuttal of the indefensible behavior of the "honorable" councilwoman.
