Goodbye to the Matriarch of the Kent GOP

    Dear Republican Friends:

It is with a heavy heart that I share with you the news that the Matriarch of the local GOP, Bee Isseldhardt, passed away on Friday evening at the age of 96.  Bee is survived by her grandson, Robb Riesch, great grandson Jimmy Riesch and son-in-law Lyle Morrison.

Bee was an outstanding supporter of our local GOP for over 40 years and an incredible role model for all of us who have followed her example and worked to build this party into what it is today.

Many of you probably remember Bee and her late daughter Gail Morrison attending every GOP event, working thousands of hours in the GOP headquarters and dedicating their lives to the Republican cause.  Both Bee and Gail were also very generous and never missed hosting the local GOP staff to Christmas Champagne Brunch at Cascade Country Club from the early 1980's until last year.

Bee first got involved in politics in 1936 when she worked to elect presidential hopeful Alf Landon.  After moving to Grand Rapids, she became a tireless worker at the Kent GOP, served as a scatterblitzer for President Gerald R. Ford's re-election campaign, precinct delegate, served on the state committee for over 20 years, and was a member of the Gerald R. Ford Republican Women's Club.

In 2007, the Kent GOP named Bee to the Michigan Republican Party Wall of Honor as a charter member along with President Gerald R. Ford.

Her phone calls, visits, and presence will sorely be missed, but she lived a great life and we are so blessed that we were able to call her a friend and part of our family.

Visitations will be held today (Monday) from 7 pm until 9 pm at the O'Brien Gerst Memorial Chapel (3980 Cascade Rd.), on Tuesday from 2 until 4 pm and from 7 until 9 pm.  Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday at 11 am at the Ada Congregational Church (6330 Ada Dr.).

Memorial contributions can be made to the Republican Women's Federation of Michigan Educational Memorial Trust Scholarship, 264 Leonard St. NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504.

    Joanne Voorhees
    Chair, Kent County Republican Committee
