    I've met Rep. Hoekstra... (none / 0) (#1)

...several times over the past two decades.

He's pretty consistent in sticking to principle, which is a refreshing change compared to most Republicans.

I was disappointed in his recent vote to hike taxes on AIG's people (and apparently so were many of his constitutients).

Unlike the Rep that we have on this side of the state who abandons her principles on a regular basis, and given that this is the only bill that comes to mind in which he drank the kool aid, I might be willing to give him a mulligan on this one.

I need to see more of his stand on the issues for '10 before going any further.

...don't you get 'JR in your neck of the woods?

    Check this out?

Maybe, but I'll look at others too. (none / 0) (#3)

I'm undecided right now and will be for awhile. He's not my current last choice (so far that is Snyder), but I am concerned because he is tied to Washington.

For the most part, he's done a good job, but he has one vote that really, really, bothers me. That is the 2nd bailout vote. He voted no the first time, but voted for it the 2nd time. What bothers me most about it is that I did not expect it from Hoekstra. It's only one major black mark, but it is significant.

From a 2nd Amendment standpoint, he's very good. From a life standpoint, he's very good. Same with taxes. I don't know him (met him twice, seems like a nice guy), and will defer to some of the others there.

I won't let the perfect be the enemy of the good and I would vote for him over Snyder and Brooks. Over Cox, Brandon, or Land though? I'll wait and see.

I have met him several times and he has always come across as very principled and willing to buck the establishment when needed.  He originally won his seat by ousting an incumbent Republican who had become part of the problem in DC.

It will be interesting to see if he can raise the money statewide to be a contender.  Mike and Terri have been building their lists of statewide supporters for 7 years now.  That will be his biggest challenge.

    A little more info is needed . . . (none / 0) (#6)

. . . about Pete Hoekstra (i.e, how he voted on key issues, background info, etc.) Plus, I have some concerns about that Twitter thing that he does (especially when it comes to national security). One of your in-depth interviews would be very helpful, Nick, along with detailed voting information.

    I'm happy. (none / 0) (#8)

I don't yet have a favorite in this race, but I am glad to see another strong choice on an already impressive list.

From the little I know of his long-term record, he at least seems to be a social conservative, and at least somewhat of a fiscal conservative.  As others mentioned, there was a 'yea' vote on the bailout, and my feelings are mixed there as well.  On the other hand, he was the only Michigan vote against the "mandatory volunteerism" bill which recently passed in the house.  That's a plus in my book.  I was actually surprised that no mention of that bill was made on this site (that I saw, anyway).  I would have enjoyed reading the local perspective on it...

. . . to speak with Congressman Hoekstra at the Michigan GOP Convention a few weeks ago.  Of the known Republican field, he's the only known Michigan FairTax Proposal supporter.  That alone gets my support.

    He's got a great shot! (none / 0) (#12)

I am undecided, but a BIG Hoekstra fan.

As long as he a. takes L. Brooks Patterson, Oakland County Executive head on over on the East side of the state,

and b. keeps his West Michigan base happy, not letting Cox, Land, or Patterson make ground, he'll have a hell of a shot at winning the nomination. Bar a crazy event, like a dramatic fundraising difference with candidates (Watch Land here, she knows how to pump the money through...)

Dems are already trying to paint Hoekstra their way. He is NOT George W Bush or Dick DeVos. Pete has STRONG appeal to many stripes of Republicans, as well as Independents and moderate Democrats.

I wouldn't get too cocky about the GOP's chances in 2010. Further, you don't just want to win, you want to win decisively because we've got a lot of ground to make up here in Michigan (e.g. in the lower house, we're in a 43-67 minority). And unless we establish a candidate that can win Oakland County decisively, I would hold off the celebration. Trust me, I live here, and the yuppy white guilt environmental, I'm a shamed of being rich mentality liberals are truly starting to take over.
