    Welcome to Scoop!

To help you figure things out, there is a Scoop Admin Guide which can hopefully answer most of your questions.

    Some tips:

    • Most of the layout is changed in "Blocks", found in the admin tools menu
    • Features can be turned on and off, and configured, in "Site Controls" in the admin tools menu
    • Stories have an "edit" link right beside the "Full Story" link on an index page, and right beside the "Post a Comment" link on the full story page. They can also be edited by clicking the story title in the "Story List" admin tool
    • Boxes are what allow you to write new features for Scoop; they require a knowledge of the perl programming language to work with effectively, although you can often make small changes without knowing much perl. If you would like a feature added but cannot program it yourself, ScoopHost does custom Scoop programming as one of its services.
    • If you aren't sure where to look for a particular feature or piece of display, try the "Search Admin Tools" link in the admin tools menu.

Marty Knollenberg makes a good point.

The Republican state representative from Troy discusses the possibility of abolishing the Michigan civil service commission. The commission, he argues, has "ignored the constitution, the Legislature, the will of the people and common sense."  From the Detroit News commentary:

"Let me explain. The Civil Service Commission recently included "other eligible individuals and their dependents" as recipients of state health care benefits. This is ridiculous. These could include any roommate, distant cousin, or live-in boyfriend or girlfriend. The only requirement for this $4,000 to $17,000 yearly health care benefit package is that they must live with a state employee for a year. What a deal and at the expense of the taxpayer."

    Indeed.

And it seems to follow the point on legitimacy of 'marriage' being used as a term for the unions of same sex couples.  Its about the money.  And in this case they step even further out onto the fringe.  That fringe, as in 'fringe benefits' for all who seemingly associate with state government workers.  Whether or not we can afford it, or if it even makes sense.

What makes sense is the next step of action by Knollenberg and the rest.  Eliminating the problem by pulling out the roots.  ~ below ~

Splitting headache today preventing too much wonderful originality, however I wanted to let you in on something good happening in Lansing.

A Michigan legislator wants legislation that bans the murder of children who happen to be unfortunate enough to have been conceived and carried in Michigan.  "Unfortunate" at least till now.

State Sen. Arlan Meekhof, is introducing (not yet enrolled)  SB 160 to ban the practice of partial birth abortion in Michigan.  The practice which has had other attempts to ban it by legislators only to be shot down by the former governatrix Jennifer Granholm. When presented with the opportunity as passed by the house 72 34 and senate 24 to 13 in 2008.

This time its different.  Or at least one would think so.

First off, the language is supposed to mirror already constitutionally vetted language by congress, because another attempt was through a citizen initiative, and was ruled unconstitutional by the 6th circuit court:

Constitutionality: The U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, affirming the U.S. District Court's decision in Northland Family Planning v Cox (docket Nos. 05-2417 and 05-2418, published June 4, 2007), held that the Legal Birth Definition Act, an act initiated by citizen petition, is unconstitutional. The court held that "invalidation of the law is the only available course" since the act "imposed an undue burden on a woman's right to terminate her pregnancy by prohibiting the D and E procedure, because it failed to adequately protect the health of the woman, and because it was void for vagueness due to its confusing language."

I would encourage the fast passage of this protection of our unborn.

Life is kinda cool.. ya know?

The Other Club's proprietor has also objected to the expensive and unnecessary additional cost for Michiganders, and really drives home the reality we face.  Duane opines:
Imminently-former-Governor Granholm's desire to manufacture windmills now moves from merely stupid to surreal. You are subsidizing the manufacture of windmills so they may be sold to people who have just arranged to tax you in order to enable distribution of electricity from the windmills. That electricity will charge the batteries Ms Granholm has also subsidized, in cars the Feds have forced you to pay for, built by a company whose union you were made to bail-out. All with no law being passed.

Former governor not soon enough..  a little over 4 hours..  Tick Tock Tick Tock

Is there not one thing that the soon to be good riddance Canadian born Democrat Governatrix and Democrat controlled House leadership can do right?

Lansing-- A legal blunder at least temporarily has left Michigan without criminal penalties for its relatively new laws banning the possession and use of drugs such as synthetic marijuana and an Ecstasy-like substance called BZP.

Yes, these little Diamonds Are gonna live Forever...

A Cap Con article reminds us that Michigan's governor was clueless about the MEDC program not producing desired results.  In the face of near constant and deserved criticisms that were based on actual figures, Jennifer Granholm somehow was able to ignore that fact that all the money poured into economic advancement programs for business by government somehow didn't seem to produce any results of substance.  From the story:
In a recent interview, outgoing Gov. Jennifer Granholm said she had no idea that the job creation announcements over the course of her two terms had been contradicted by studies finding that just over 70 percent of the bragged-about jobs were never created. James Hohman, fiscal policy analyst for the Mackinac Center, was stunned when he learned that Granholm told the Michigan Information and Research Service that she hadn't heard of any evidence contradicting the rosy job scenarios she had been promoting through the embattled Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

Of course!  Now this makes complete sense..

I/We have been writing about it here, and elsewhere that it takes a truly backward political ideology to harvest such failure from a state that had the best crop of success to begin with.  More than once its been pointed out on these pages that Michigan once upon a time had the most resistance to recession, and recovered from down turns the fastest.  Backward policy HAD to be the culprit.

Perhaps it was some other orientation as well? (Finished below)

Just when you thought it was safe to spend

    the Taxpayer's money...

Remember all of those wonderful scholarships that once upon a time had funding through 'promises' and 'pledges' and earmarked tobacco cash?

Oh My.. THOSE were the days.

$300 Million dollars a year dedicated to whatever the state wanted to do.  Completely fungible money, paid for by the health issues that state's attorneys argued cost the taxpayer in the first place.  $300 Million to pay for Johnnie and Suzie's college tuition once, and later, maybe 4100 million for a state police post that was not needed.  Gosh happy days, and dollar signs in the eyes of anyone who thought they could tap into the 'free money' promised by the settlement with big tobacco about 12 years ago.  Money so stable, that even spending it ahead of time was not out of the question.

Umm  Folks?  Put the credit card down for a minute.  We seem to have hit a snag. It seems the agreement by attorney's general of several states, (GUESS WHO OUR AG AT THE TIME WAS? - Haha fooled you .. it wasnt YET the drooling over those funds JG to the right.) and some tobacco concerns represents an illegal compact between states, which is seen as unconstitutional.

The background: The case was brought by the Competitive Enterprise Institute on behalf of a tobacco company, S&M Brands, a tobacco retailer and a cigarette consumer. The group sued the Louisiana Attorney General in 2005, claiming, among other things, that the Louisiana legislation which effected the terms of the 1998 settlement represented an illegal "compact" among states.

Though this challenge is presented as 'unlikely' to succeed, the CEI is right.  The rule of law is on their side, which provides a troubling aspect of cure.

How is this made right? How are damaged parties repaired?  What.. Is Michigan's liability after 12 years and $3.6Billion dollars worth of spending later?

Michigan's Soon To Be Gone Governor - Tinker Bell or Barbarella?

The Cap Con's Tom Gantert today writes about our executive destroyer's politico op-ed, and how she offers advice to the rest of the country on how to create jobs:

Granholm served as a guest op-ed writer for the national news site POLITICO. Saying the nation needs a "moon shot" jobs strategy to create 3 million new jobs, she used as an example Michigan government's recent bet that the lithium-ion battery industry should be cultivated with special treatment and favors from state government.

Granholm wrote: "If the states are the laboratories of democracy, Washington can take a lesson from what is happening in Michigan."

Jenny, Jenny, Jenny...  shut up.  Just fade away, explode, dissolve in the sunlight, etc.. Whatever it takes to get your vampire's touch off this state, but please just shut up, and do not try to peddle your failure to the rest of the country any longer.

You talk of learning from what is happening?  How can you even say that, when you have learned nothing?  Even a stupid animal eventually knows that its paws get burned if it touches fire.

Below the gutter line for more..
