    13.  Get to know your local elected officials, and let them know (politely, of course, regardless of their political bent) what you think is best for your county/state/country.  My parents seem to know every elected official where they live, and I have attempted to make the acquaintance of as many as possible.  An in-person comment probably makes more impact than an e-mail or letter...and you can't even be sure the intended recipient reads those!
