A lack of explanation for the problem (none / 0) (#14)
by mm9 on Thu Dec 01, 2011 at 03:20:48 AM EST
The argument made against legal immigration here is lacking in detail. NumbersUSA correctly and convincingly makes the point that legal immigration to the US has greatly increased in recent years, but fails to explain in any detail why this is bad. I find the argument that legal immigration takes away jobs from native-born Americans to be at odds with all of my previous reading on the subject. My previous reading on the subject (which comes from a wide variety of sources) suggests that legal immigrants, particularly those who are highly skilled, create jobs such that, at the very least, immigrant-fueled job creation keeps pace with immigration. At the same time, the economic output of the US is increased through this, which can only be good for us. This may not hold true in the short term during a recession, and illegal immigration is another issue entirely, but thus far, the evidence appears to suggest that legal immigration is a net positive.
