Breaking News: Senate to announce panel to study MDOC

Hearing some talk tonight about big news coming out of the Senate tomorrow.  Expect to hear an announcement that a subcommittee or task force will be created to study potential reforms and changes in the Michigan Department of Corrections.  The news comes a day after Governor Granholm announced plans to close a jail in Jackson County, releasing 1,500 inmates and killing 400 local jobs.

They're expected to model other states who've faced and overcome similar DOC problems.  The Senate, apparently, believes the answer to the state's fiscal troubles won't be solved by giving bad guys a get-out-of-jail-free card.

And keep in mind, Majority Leader Bishop is also expected to work up spending cuts to balance the budget without raising taxes.

Notice the difference in approach between the Republicans in the Senate and the Democrat Governor Granholm?  Bishop's looking to balance the budget in addition to studying DOC to find the best reforms.  Granholm avoided discussion and deliberation in deciding to balance the budget by letting prisoners out of jail with zero regard for the consequences.  Period.  Nevermind the 400 jobs she's willing to kill.  And that's all AFTER attempting to raise taxes by $3 billion.

More details should be available in the morning, so stay tuned, but remember, you heard it here first.

MDOC needs federal investigation (none / 0) (#1)
by Anonymous Hero on Sun Mar 04, 2007 at 03:17:22 PM EST
It is not only the prisons run by the MDOC and Patricia Caruso it is parole and probation also.  These two agencies are equally mismanaged and underfunded.  Have you heard about all the "employees" Patricia has fired? That's her favorite response.   These are mearly the lowest men and women on the totem pole, the guys in the trenches risking their lives that she throws out as bait.  Come on, do you really think these are the people who are screwing up?  This is an out of control political bus that the MDOC is throwing their employees under!
