Chamber of the Michigan House of Representatives, Thursday, May 31, 2007.

Raise your hand if you watched Sesame Street as a kid, or with your kids, or still watch it now.... Ok, if you still watch it now you don't have to admit it.  Remember that old song that went like this: "One of these things is not like the others.  One of these things does not belong?"

    Let's play, shall we?

Highest unemployment rate in the nation (7.1%)?  Check.

College graduates rushing for the borders after graduation?  Check.

3 million new jobs in the United States just not in Michigan?  Check.

    SBT replacement MIA?  Check.

$1.8 billion budget deficit for FY2008?  Check.

Bond rating in the toilet?  Check.

    Full-time legislature?  Check.

Top 5 pay scale nationally for state legislators?  Check.

Following a two-day work week with a five-day weekend at Michigan's premier vacation destination, bicycling, taking carriage rides, lounging on hotel porches and eating fudge?  Check.

And lest we forget, it was 141 Days ago now that Andy Dillon said:

"We are facing a budget shortfall this current fiscal year in excess of $500 million and next year's is in excess of $3 billion. Bottom line: We have a lot of work to do...

"We did this in anticipation of the looming budget crisis and the need for us to roll up our sleeves and get to work immediately."

Journal of the House, Jan. 10, 2007, pgs. 22-23

It took the Speaker 135 days to even pass a budget fix for 2007.  Now his chamber's left town and headed up north to Mackinac Island.  I mean, check out this schedule.  Four days of work followed by a three day Memorial Day weekend followed by two days of work followed by a five-day weekend on the Island.

Now how do I get that gig?

    Busy Senate session today (1.00 / 1) (#1)
by Communications Guru on Thu May 31, 2007 at 11:17:55 AM EST
This is the third post you have used to gig the House for not holding a session today, and then you try and claim that it's not a big deal. Did you see what was accomplished in the Senate today? Nothing.

You made this ridiculous claim, "Andy Dillon's house, facing a $1.6 billion budget deficit in FY08 and still working on a replacement for the SBT has decided working this Thursday is for the birds. Or, well, for the Senate.  They'll be in session."

The Senate convened at 10 a.m. today and adjourned at 11:05, for a total of 65 minutes. Fifty-five minutes were taken up by a tribute to the 100th anniversary of President Teddy Roosevelt's visit to the Capitol, complete with a TR look-alike giving the same speech given in the Senate in 1907. Of the 10 minute left, not one vote was taken. Why bother?

You sure have a lot to brag about, but then it again, it's not really important, only worth three posts.

    It is important (5.00 / 1) (#2)

Who ever said it wasn't important?  I wouldn't talk about it if I didn't think it was important.

    I'll say it again...

Highest unemployment rate in the nation (7.1%)?  Check.

Hmm... not quite consistent there is he?

    Mackinac Conference (5.00 / 1) (#3)
by MarensMom on Thu May 31, 2007 at 02:28:02 PM EST
BOTH chambers of the legislature and the executive branch should be ashamed that they are out of session and on Mackinac Island, and not working to solve our state's critical issues.

Having attended the conference a few times, I can attest that nothing of consequence will be done on the Island vis a vis the legislative process.  It's a shameful waste of money by those who are supposed to be representing us.

    It's all about their ego (5.00 / 1) (#4)
by Dutchsma on Thu May 31, 2007 at 04:24:34 PM EST
They get to drink all they want for free and have people wait on them and make them feel really important.

That's all some of these guys really want...to have someone stroke their ego and make them FEEL important.

    Good rebuttal (1.00 / 1) (#6)

    Off topic? Check.

    Ignore the facts? Check.

Michigan's three largest universities outperform some of the best-known university research systems in other states? Check.

House Speaker Andy Dillon and Mike Bishop publicly agreed for the first time that they reached a consensus on replacing the SBT Thursday during a forum at the Detroit Chamber's Mackinac Policy Conference on Mackinac Island.

According to Gongwers, "A solid majority of business executives polled by the Detroit Regional Chamber believe that Michigan's business climate will be stronger in five years." That must really be disappointing to you?
