Mark Brewer, counsel for the Ku Klux KlanBy Lyman Redding, Section News
It is well known in Michigan that, in 1994, current Michigan Democratic Party chairman Mark Brewer represented the Ku Klux Klan in that organization's effort to march in Lansing. Now, the Michigan Citizen is taking Brewer to task for backing a white nominee to run for the Michigan Supreme Court.
The Michigan Citizen could have simply endorsed Diane Hathaway, a white Wayne Circuit Court judge running against Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Cliff Taylor -- the man whose very name drives Brewer into fits. But the Citizen did not endorse Hathaway and, instead, went after the former counsel for the Grand Dragon, citing Brewer's complete indifference to Deb Thomas, a black Wayne Circuit Court judge who had been campaigning for the nomination for at least a year. Brewer decided instead to back Hathaway, who had only declared her interest in the nomination a few days before the state Democrat convention. Just goes to show: You can't change a klansman's sheets.
