"When you take the t-e-x-t out of context, you're left with c-o-n, and we have been conned," Detroit Branch NAACP President Wendell Anthony said as he announced the dinner's keynote speaker Thursday at a news conference.

I haven't talked about Jeremiah Wright here on Right Michigan to this point.  He's one of those characters and one of those stories that's radioactive and distasteful enough that I happily reasoned "it's not happening in Michigan."  He represents a part of America I wish didn't exist.  A part I'd rather not discuss if I don't have to.  I'm all about "picking fights" but there has to be a line somewhere in the sand.  A boundary you won't cross.  Because you know the minute you do things get a heck of a lot uglier and there's no going back.

My younger brother Casey was born bigger than me.  Almost literally.  Two years my junior but everything I'm not physically.  I remember being a six year old at church and walking next to him and hearing "oh, are you guys twins?" every single week.  No exceptions.  By the time he was ten he was bigger, stronger... I was a runt.  But I was still the oldest and that lead to some epic battles in the living room or the backyard.  Some of our fights are still legendary among our friends from the neighborhood.

But there were unspoken rules of engagement.  No hitting in the face and never, EVER, strike below the belt.  We might have been at each other's throats (that was allowed) but at the end of the day we were still brothers and best friends.

Lines you just shouldn't cross, you know?

Jeremiah Wright is the nut-shot of 2008 political discourse.  It's crude, it's distasteful, it's ugly, it's painful and when it's all said and done you've only made things worse.

So it was with considerable (seriously) displeasure that I read the report in this morning's Detroit Free Press.  The Detroit Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has lined up one heck of a big name guest to keynote their fancy annual fundraising dinner on Sunday, April 27.

Barack Obama's pastor and potential hate-monger-in-chief, Jeremiah Wright, will be making his first big public appearance and darn it all if he isn't being welcomed with open arms in the most troubled and racially divided city in the United States of America.  Get ready, Motor City, you haven't seen hate like this in a long, long time.

    Read on...

Reverend Anthony... what the heck are you doing?!  The annual Freedom Fund Dinner has been one of THE big events in the State for years.  It's an event that's always had some measure of credibility.  Sure, you stack the dais with your favorite Dem party bosses and it's a bit of a lefty love-fest... ok, it's a huge lefty love-fest but love is very different from hate.

I understand wanting to push the boundaries.  I do.  I understand wanting to use controversy to gin up a little extra cash or to knock folks out of their comfort zones... I absolutely 100% abhor when folks who pretend to be clergy cross clear biblical thresholds to get there but the NAACP isn't a faith based organization, you're welcome to do whatever you'd like to do I suppose... but this?  Then again, maybe this just speaks to your membership:

The Rev. Nicholas Hood III, pastor of Plymouth United Church of Christ and a former Detroit councilman, said he has known Wright for about 30 years. They met at clergy events and seminars because they share a denomination -- the predominantly white United Church of Christ -- and Hood said he thinks of him as a true biblical scholar, generous teacher and linguist. He has invited Wright to speak at his church revivals the past 15 years...

"I've never heard him say anything unpatriotic," Hood said. "I know there have been sound bites that have been characterized in that way, but I've found him to be a tremendous human being."

Hood, who acknowledges that Wright sometimes uses "racy, raunchy and raw language" to make his sermons relevant (sic) to younger churchgoers, said the man is far more complex, humorous and open-minded than how he is being portrayed. Before his retirement he welcomed gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people to his congregation, a move that cost him a significant number of members who left the church in disagreement.

In response to the Hood's defense of racy and raunchy language from the pulpit I'd submit the third chapter of the Epistle of James.  From the Bible.  Something folks claiming to be clergy should know something about.

And because the cat's apparently been living under a rock the last couple months he might want to check this out.

Barack Obama has sworn off these comments.  Barack Obama says he disagrees with them.  I know, convenient timing... didn't have a problem while the venom was being spewed but now that he's been caught... but still... Anthony, Hood, the NAACP leadership team... the hate's in plain view and they're not only cool with it, they're embracing it?

What's happened to the NAACP?  This was once one of the proudest and best respected institutions for good in the United States of America.  That's the USA.  Not the USKKKA, Jeremy.

But there's a political angle here too... Lets remember, this is a racist who canceled events in Texas in the run-up to the primary there because Obama's instinct for self preservation finally kicked in.  He drives down Obama's support.  He's an albatross.  He reminds people of the real Barack Obama, the Barack Obama even Barack Obama wishes he could hide for forever.

And listen, I'm all about Barack Obama's supporters burning his chances to the ground here in Michigan.  Seriously, I am.  And make no mistake, this is not a move that's going to HELP him win any of the white, blue collar Reagan Democrats in Oakland and Macomb Counties he so desperately needs.  You want to give the election away piece by piece, support group by support group that's your prerogative.  But don't do it like this.

Stick a hate monger in front of a crowd of folks pre-disposed to his message in the most racially polarized place maybe in the world and you're not doing anyone any favors, least of all your likely Presidential nominee.

People of conscience should boycott the event.  More than that, they should put their checkbook away and take the NAACP off their annual charity list.  Folks in the blogosphere use hyperbole every day but there's really no way of stating just how bad a decision this is for the organization, for Obama and more importantly, for Detroit.  We've been working for more than forty years to heal the all-too-often raw wounds of racism in motor city.  This decision does not help.

I am not the least bit surprised by the NAACP selecting Wright as their speaker. I believe that it is the black community that does not want racial issues to go away. It is my belief that they want to keep this drum to beat whenever possible to keep reaping the benefits from ignorant politicians. Your statement about this issue being "nuclear" is absolutely true and it is the black community that wants to keep it that way. I am not racist in any way, I judge each person on their individual merits as a person. I believe that if ALL (white, black, red, yellow, purple, whatever)people did this there would be no racial tensions anywhere.

    ... phrasing on this:

"He came under fire last month after TV networks showed portions of sermons in which he used biting words..."

In short, The DFP is saying the meanies at the nets only cherry picked a few out-of-context "biting" words.  At least they didn't call him "feisty," which is the standard media codeword for someone obnoxious that liberals still love.

I welcome the good Rev. Wright to Detroit.  I believe that the more we can open the doors to these churches, so people can understand the hatred and racism being taught to these congregations week after week, the sooner they will be shunned by all politicians out of a sense of self-preservation.

Currently, McCain and Obama are neck and neck in the polls.  Will this visit swing any voters toward Obama?  No.  Anyone capable of being influenced by Rev. Wright is already an Obama supporter.  Will it help McCain?  Yes.  This will scare not only the suburban voters, but businesses will be second-guessing any decision they have made to support the NAACP.

I hope the networks broadcast the speech.  Should be good for a 5 point swing toward McCain.

I thought (I heard) conservatives were going to be keeping the "Uncle Hate" issue alive.

Maybe it's me but it sure has sounded like it was going to be a baaad thing to keep the Wright/Obama topic going and that some would continue to do that in order to have the voter (continue to) link Obama with Wright.

The NAACP is their base. Does this mean the Dems are pandering to their base? They have a hate base?  I thought they were trying to say they didn't?

Is this code for something?  Are they trying to encourage more dialog about hate?  "Unfortunately a lot of folks don't really know who the man is," Anthony, another one of their Reverends, said.  The MSM would have us believe that continued talk of Wright would be tantamount to smear tactics. They're wrong again!  Clearly, Rev. Anthony/NAACP would strongly prefer Wright be exposed to the masses.

I am surprised as well about the racial rhetoric used in these churches and it does explain alot. I wish Wright would go away but that would be the easy way out.  I am starting to think that it is a good thing Wright is coming.  This issue should not go away.  Racism will not improve while the black community continues to use it to their perceived advantage.

When we consider all the things that the black folk have been through, it's so tragic that they allow themselves to be race baited like this from the haters. But lets remember, though there are many areas where it's inexcusable for them to not "get a grip" in the Detroit area, this other stuff must be blamed on those who are truly at fault, the politicians and so called leaders who constantly provoke the black community.

I think you guys do not understand why Rev. Wright was picked for this year's annual dinner. Ticket sales were low this year due to the slowing and non-existent economy. The Detroit Branch NAACP is trying to keep money flowing and Rev. Wright is it.

Rev. Wright was here a couple of months ago at Oak Grove AME in Detroit. He is no stranger here for that he has influenced many people such as Rev. Charles Adams, pastor of Hartford Memorial Baptist Church.

The MAIN reason why I have never joined the Detroit Branch or Michigan State Conference NAACP is because they do not tackle issues that are critical in the Black community. We have a HIV/AIDS/STD problem in our community that they refuse to discuss. We have an educational pandemic that is out of control. We have am abortion problem that stems from the lack of family development and values. They never talk about these issues and never will. Not even the young people in the NAACP discuss these issues and they are mostly affected by them.

I have been to the dinners in the past (including last year) and yes it is a liberal festival. However, we do have urban conservatives in the mix doing the same thing that I have been doing....educating people about how the NAACP has failed Detroit. So, don't write off the Detroit Branch because all they are doing is pushing young people away from the liberal mindset.
