Ivory Tower Endorsements Weak On Substance

(Promoted by Nick... glad you decided to join us in the official / unofficial blogging capacity!)

I have been a fan of RightMichigan since it launched and have posted comments from time to time.  This is my first blog submittal.  I am based in Macomb County and will be submitting articles from time to time about the local races going on down here.

For my first blog, I am going to provide some insights into their questionable standards when they are making their endorsements.  For example, in State Representative District 24, the Ivory Tower endorsed a current Macomb County Commissioner for the Democratic nomination.  On the Republican side, Bryan Brandenburg is running unopposed.  So, this is not "sour grapes" because they endorsed another Democrat.  This is about the type of Democrat they chose to endorse.

So, lets examine the Free Press choice, Ms. Sarah Roberts.  First, they mention that she can make the tough choices.  As evidence of this they mention how she "pushed" for a reduction in the county fleet expenses as well as mileage reimbursements.  Well, after a quick call to a couple of other county commissioners (one who chairs the Budget Committee, so he is probably a good source for information on budget matters), neither position was ever put into effect.  Now, here is the kicker.  Ms. Roberts is a Democrat on a board that is dominated by Democrats, by at 18-8 margin.  So, if she can't get her ideas passed by her own party, how does the Free Press believe she will be effective in Lansing?

Maybe the Free Press believes she has more experience than her opponents.  After all, they say that she was a former community organizer (doesn't that appear on Obama's resume too, and does anybody know what that job is?).  She has been on the county commission for less than 2 years, so that is some experience.  But, one of her opponents, David Cavanagh, served on the Wayne County Commission for 6 years.  You would think that the Free Press would love Mr. Cavanagh's experience much better.  He has Wayne County government experience.  That is the best type of experience the Free Press would love to have, right?

So, unfortunately, there is only one conclusion as to why the Free Press would make such an endorsement.  Sarah Roberts is the Lansing Democratic power brokers' handpicked candidate.  So, regardless of her lack of experience or lack of effectiveness, the Free Press was probably just doing what they were told.  I guess when Mr. Brewer issues an order; the Free Press must follow it regardless how ridiculous that order may be.
