Macomb Democrats Fail Again to Balance Budget

    (Promoted by Nick...)

At the Budget Committee meeting today, it was expected that the majority ruling Democrats on the Macomb County Board of Commissioners would deal with the ever increasing deficit, now running at $33 Million.  However, the Democrats of Macomb County have proven again their inability to lead.

According to the Ivory Tower, a 5 hour meeting to discuss potential cuts, changes to the overly generous retirement plan and even a potential tax increase yielded nothing.  No cuts, no changes, nothing.  This should show the state on whether Democrats at any level are capable of leading.

    Read On....

You have a total debacle of leadership in Detroit.  You have Two Penny Jenny only showing a hint of leadership during the state budget showdown last year.  Unfortunately, she led us into tax increases and not much else.  And, then you have Democrats in Congress who won't even allow a vote on off-shore drilling despite 70% of the people being in favor of it.  And finally, you have Barack Obama who can't even lead a convention with the Clinton's throwing wrenches into everything (Seriously, how can you think you are ready to lead when you can't even effectively negotiate a roll call vote at a convention that you control).

But, back to Macomb County, the only voices of reason that are coming forward are the Republicans.  Led by Commissioner Peter Lund (soon to be State Representative Lund), they have been calling for making the hard cuts for 4 years now.  Instead, the Democrats have, year after year, just taken money out of the rainy day fund.  They might have been at least praying that things would get better, but I doubt it.  While Lund was calling for sanity to take hold, the Democrats just kept spending.  Deficits have been going from around $10 Million to going up to $43 Million next year.

Now, the Democrats are facing the exact work that they have sowed.  If the cuts were made in the past, then less drastic cuts would be required now.  And, if cuts were made in the past, then a tax cut would not even need to be considered.  But, thats not how these Democrats lead.  The voters of Michigan should take noticed.  Macomb serves as a good example if you have all the power in the hands of only the Democrats.  Trust me...it is not a good thing to happen for any government.

    Flipping Republicons? (none / 0) (#1)

    This one is classic:

"you have Democrats in Congress who won't even allow a vote on off-shore drilling despite 70% of the people being in favor of it."

Just like the majority of Americans want us out of Iraq but we get lectured by Republicons about how they don't vote based on poll numbers. Can you at least fake being consistent?

"If the cuts were made in the past, then less drastic cuts would be required now.  And, if cuts were made in the past, then a tax cut would not even need to be considered."

Perfect example of how Republicons ran the state through the end of the 1990s.

The Macomb County BoC has been spending down its "surplus" for years now to make their budget balanced.

There are plenty of areas to cut from the county budget, but because the BoC faces their employee unions on a daily basis (moreso than the residents they represent), they become weak-in-the-knees when it comes to making hard choices like the rest of us have had to do with their own family budgets.

Take for example: Martha T. Berry medical facility. The counry isn't even required to operate it. This can be sold with the profits going back into the county, to say nothing about the savings from their projected budget increases for '09.

The 70-point plan. This was a ridiculous plan that the BoC agree to the placate the unions that allowed employees to retire at age 50 with a very generous benefit package.

The BoC itself. There was a plan put forth to cut the BoC's own pay and benefits (from a Democrat, no less). Unfortunately, the majority of the BoC is looking out for themselves on this one.

I can continue, but I've made my point.

Educate yourself on the goings on in Macomb County before you embarass yourself again in the future.

...you'll have evidence to support your assertion?

I meant a timetable that was dictated by the situation, not an arbitrary number pulled out of some warm, dark place. And yes, a friendly country that, despite all of the press to the contrary, is HAPPY that we did what we did.
