MDOT's Evil Empire vs. Detroit Bridge to Nowhere

    (Fascinating issue...)

So, Granholm and her legislative tools are threatening a partial "government shutdown" Oct. 1 if Senate Repubs (mostly Allen Cropsey) don't cave and allow MDOT to proceed on the track of spending a billion taxpayer dollars on a bureaucratic empire-building Detroit River International Crossing bridge that is probably not needed at all, and which in any event has a private contractor willing to build at no taxpayer cost in a slightly different location. (That being wheeler-dealer extraordinaire Manny Maroun, who proposes to "twin" the existing Ambassodor Bridge with another span right next to it.)

If there's no deal then all road construction/repar in the state stops Oct. 1.

The politics are interesting. Repubs could go on offense, state the facts, and use "Bridge to Nowhere" notoriety to break through the media fog and bias with a cause and label that bottom-feeding reporters won't be able to resist, much though they're loathe to not genuflect to St. Jen and the Messiah in the weeks before a big election. Oh, and the Senators aren't up for reelection, so they could just tell St. Jen to stuff it and go fishing.

Do Senate Repubs have the smarts, cojones and - perhaps most doubtful - the energy to pull that off? Do they have the moxie to risk it?

One possible trap door: Using that "Bridge to Nowhere" label could risk being accused of charactizing as "nowhere" either, A. Detroit, B. Canada, C. Detroit and Canada. Well, if the shoe fits . . .

they are beginning to wake up and move back toward being conservative and away from their socialist ways...why insult them by comparing them to Detroit?

I'd drop any reference to the "Bridge to Nowhere".

In this particular scenario, it would be counterproductive.

I'd stick with the facts on this one.

Keep it something simple, like this:

Do you really want to spend money we don't have or do you want to get hit up with a tax hike to spend money where it isn't needed...you decide.

They didn't when they had the chance to lay a governemnt shut down at the feet of Gov. Job Killer with a "buck stops at the Govenor's office"
and allowed two taxes raises to be voted in

So what would lead me to believe they would now?

I like Canada alot. Hockeye and beer, what could be better.

But on the Bridge, Traffic is down (with the economy).  Long term trends are rising - but today MI taxpayers should in no way pay for a bridge anyway you look at it.  If a private party can pull off a bridge, great.  Michigan can not afford this.  You would think 9% unemployment would hit Jenny harder, but perhaps a spending spree makes her feel better.

How the Senate can avoid this fight I just don't get it.  No wonder folks are PO'ed.

From the Det News in 07'

"Stamper said Ambassador traffic volumes do not support the case for a new bridge. Total passenger-vehicle and truck crossings have plummeted 24 percent since 1999 and, with the auto industry struggling, show no signs of picking up, he said. "
