Too Healthy for Healthcare in Michigan?

An Open Letter from my wife:

There have been two times in my life in which I didn't advocate for the best health care available.  The first time was when I was pregnant with my daughter living in a rural area and my physician refused to run a routine ultrasound.

There have been two times in my life in which I didn't advocate for the best health care available.  The first time was when I was pregnant with my daughter living in a rural area and my physician refused to run a routine ultrasound.  I was suckered into his reasoning and 19 years later still regret that decision.  Today was the second time, but this time I believe was truly more of the "signs of the times."  My 17 year old son came down with the signs of H1N1 and as a diligent mother took him into our early hour pediatrician.  Yes they confirmed that he "probably" has H1N1, and with that go home and treat the symptoms.  Are you kidding me? What happened to "if you get to the doctor within 24 hours of having a fever the doctor can start Tamiflu and reduce the duration of the illness?"  Do you want to know the answer?  According to the Certified Nurse Practitioner (CNP) that we saw today, my son is too healthy for Tamiflu.  According  to the CNP he doesn't fit the Center for Disease Controls criteria for getting a prescription for the drug.  The longer I was at home today with a young man suffering with chills and a fever, the more angry I got at the CDC to make that kind of call for my child.  For over 25 years I have paid into either an employer insurance program or bought my own private insurance.  I have had to get referrals and pre-approvals for some procedures.  Yes this can be irritating and aggravating, but I have never been told that a government agency can decide what my private insurance can provide for me.  This gets me back to the "signs of the time".  Last week, the government floated a "trial balloon" about mammograms and self breast exam claiming most women are too healthy to really need these early tests.  Then they tried the PAP smear thing again using healthy ages to determine when they are needed.  Folks, we were concerned about care being rationed at later ages, but I am certain with the healthcare debates going on, no one will be safe from being rationed care or a simple prescription.  Believe it or not, you may be too healthy for care!  I have been one of those "pesky tea-party, keep your hands off my healthcare" participants all year long.  Today I am re-energized for the fight.  I sat in a doctor's office and numbingly agreed to what the CNP told me, because the government told her what to say.   If the healthcare bill goes through we will all be hearing through our trusted physicians what the government bureaucracy wants us to hear and we will not have any recourse.  We need to speak up now.
