Who are the NERD fund donors Mr Snyder?

    Raise the curtain.

    I can see the future

    So,

Our esteemed Governor, Lt. Governor, and quite a few members of our legislature are convinced that green technology is the future, and will be the key to making MI a great place to live again.

The House even just now voted to expand tax credits to solar panel producers.

And it sounds great, doesn't it? We'll all build windmills, and solar panels, and grow weeds in our yards that will be turned into clean energy, and after millions of years of human experience, we will finally, once and for all, defeat the bane of our existence, the opportunity cost.

Now I have read through my comments since I've been on RightMichigan, and realized that I am quite a negative nelly.  I mean, I never have anything positive to say about anything... positively Eeyore.

And I realize that being a conservative means I just want to be left alone, and that we only get fired up when something bad is happening, and I hate to admit it, but--- I have a problem with green energy and government subsidies.

Here's the question that needs to be asked:

What is it about a windmill turbine, or a propellor, or a solar panel, or anything else that encompasses green energy that can only be made in Michigan?

Not even Indiana or Ohio, or Vietnam or China, but Michigan.

See, the automobile is going the way of the Do Do bird in this state, and O Ring manufacturers can't build new production lines because the DEQ won't approve mining in the U.P., and we can't seem to build new coal plants so that leftists can twitter each other on their blackberries about how "the GOP is anti environment and wants to destroy the world" cheaply anymore... and mom and pop restaurants and dry cleaners just saw their business tax liability go up something like 800%... heck, we can't even build washing machines.

But solar panels? Now you are talking.

Notice that the House voted for tax incentives...

Which makes sense.  I mean, we need to draw in businesses that are fad industries and are going to go belly up in a few years w/o massive government subsidies.

And who cares about the guy that just opened a coney island, or the lady who just opened a used bookstore, or the immigrant who came in to open a grocery store, or yet another Lansing politico who opened up their own consulting business... you guys are stuck here. Enjoy that surcharge.

But, once these green companies start up, I"m going to make a prediction.  Unless this state gets rid of onerous regulations, and gets the tax burden under control, and continues to look for new and exciting issues to make it impossible to turn a profit:  in ten years or less, every windmill in this state will have a stamp on it, probably hidden to not offend the sensibilities of those that worked so hard to determine the future for all of us:

The green energy myth ridiculous. The comical thing about the windmills is European company's are salivating at the chance to enter our market and build windmills, while Germany is building 26 coal power plants in the meantime..

ignores one glaring problem:  Michigan apparently can't remain competitive in the auto industry - an industry that started here, an industry that we effectively owned for a long time.  How do they expect a brand new industry to take off and thrive in the same state, with the same strong unions, with the same lousy business climate?  Labor is still cheaper in other states and other countries.  It's not as if we know how to make windmills and solar panels, and nobody else does.

In other words, incentives aside, Michigan has no advantage in attracting these industries.  If anything, they would be wise to stay away.  I don't know what length of time these tax incentives are for, but my bet is that if/when they go away, so does our new green industry.

I also find it convenient that the Governor is happy enough to sign onto tax incentives to lure in "cool" new industries, but refuses to remove the SBT Surcharge unless it's revenue is replaced.

    Is it 2010 yet?
