When the MEA declares open war on one of their oldest, biggest boosters, the Democratic Speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives, a guy can be forgiven for wondering which way is up and whether the universe suddenly spun off it's axis.

But you know what they say... the more things change the more they stay the same.

Lest you lose your footing, your grip on reality or your general intellectual equilibrium, there is evidence in fish-wraps across the state today that things aren't as topsy-turvy as the MEA / Dillon spat might indicate, and what good is a site like Right Michigan if we don't keep you grounded in reality?

Not that reality is eeeeveryone's strong suit, though, but isn't that about what we've come to expect from paper's like the Ivory Tower?  The state's leading Lefty pub carries an AP story with an interesting headline that proclaims "Teenagers may receive pay raise this week."

Michigan teenagers who have jobs might see a pay raise this week.

Michigan's subminimum wage, a wage paid to employees younger than 18, will jump from $6.55 to $7.25 when the federal minimum wage rises to that rate on Friday.

And they're right, technically, though I couldn't help but be carried away to the bygone days of the Cold War when a two-car automobile race between the Soviets and the United States once produced a Moscow Headline proclaiming- "Soviets finish second, Americans second to last."

Yes.  Some teenagers might get a pay raise this week as the government introduces another bureaucratic regulation on job makers across the country, even here in a state where job makers have become an endangered species. Alas, many teenagers will also get a pretty serious pay reduction this week when their bosses crunch the numbers and decided instead of paying the higher wage they'll do without the seasonal help the rest of the way.

And as teenagers across the state find their jobs no longer exist, their parents back at home suddenly find themselves dealing with skyrocketing prices on their monthly utility bill, thanks in large part to the MEA's whipping boy, Andy Dillon.  The Grand Rapids Press reports on new, and unstoppable, rate hikes headed our way from Consumers and DTE.

    Read on...

While most public debate over the energy bill last year was focused on the renewable energy provisions, there was a less-noticed provision and that's what I was noticing.

It lets state-regulated utilities raise rates without state regulators' OK.

It turns out Consumers Energy was the first Michigan power company to take advantage of the new rule that lets it "self-implement" a price increase for its 1.8 million customers -- without approval from the Michigan Public Service Commission...

Consumers Energy will not be alone.

Thursday, DTE Energy became the second to "self-implement" a higher rate for 2.1 million customers, levying a 2.6 percent increase.

The relaxed rules also apply to natural gas utilities, and Consumers Power is getting ready to boost its rate for that.

Ah, the beauty of a state-sponsored monopoly.  When customers have no choice but to pay whatever you charge you can charge an awful lot.  Big ups to Speaker Dillon and the House and Senate Dems (and a few of our "friends" in the Senate GOP caucus, too) for inserting this ray of light into each of our lives.  And by ray of light I mean two-by-four to the back of the head of our family budgets.

Not everything is doom and gloom and Dem-bungling-leading-to-less-cash-in-our-pockets, though.   While Lansing puts the screws to Michigan families, the Detroit News reports this morning that others out there are working to provide a significantly more loving touch.

Turns out the Rochester Church of Christ has been feeding hundreds of homeless in the heart of Detroit.

But the Rev. Patrick Mead, the senior pastor, said Sunday's event is more than just feeding people. It's making a personal connection and humanely treating those who are less fortunate. The church also helps to clothe 400 families a month.

"We don't want to just feed them," Mead said.

"It's important for us to look them in the eye, get to know them and pray with them if they want to. Anybody could be down here. We're all pretty close to the situation. Our church believes in getting outside of the building and getting your hands dirty. We cannot sleep at night if we can't do this."

Great work and a great story.  Now let's get a new leadership team in Lansing come 2011 so fewer of us wind up needing the CoC's help in coming years.

... on how increases in minimum wage rules impact the growth of "off the books" employment?  It could be (especially with the teenage jobs noted above) that a higher minimum drives more such work off the tax rolls into a cash-only arrangement.  (The proper government solution, of course, is to push for more intrusive regulation of employment, and the abolition of cash).

    different results...what's that called again?

    Oh yeah, INSANE!

Even a dummy with a minimum of sense knows not to create more overhead when facing an economic crises.

I think it's a good time to remember Sonia Sotomayor's favorite person to quote: Norman Thomas said, "The American people will never knowingly adopt Socialism. But under the name of 'liberalism' they will adopt every fragment of the Socialist program, until one day America will be a Socialist nation, without
    knowing how it happened."

Under various names the Socialist thing has been tried before and ALWAYS failed where implemented. Again, it's insane to keep trying something while believing for different results.
