Canada Plans To Bomb US Canal..By JGillman, Section News
Canada demonstrating a desire to maintain the health of its exposure to the great lakes, announced today the planning of a bombing run to seal off the Great Lakes Basin from the invasive Asian Carp species.
OK.. Maybe he didn't say that.. and maybe it isn't going to happen..
But we need to take this Asian Carp situation just as seriously..
The carp would indeed cause irreversible harm to the Great Lakes region by devouring large and massive amounts of food that are needed by native fish populations, and altering the native habitat. Further, the carp have a tendency to jump out of the water when startled, which makes them a hazard to boaters.
The ecological impact alone is devastating, but the danger to boaters and sportsmen is equally as serious. AG Mike Cox has attempted to obtain a court decision providing a better barrier by closing the locks that will allow the carp to enter the lakes, so far to no avail. Currently the Obama administration, and officials in Illinois are the only one's holding up the ability to close the locks. This is worthy of writing letters folks. The financial impact to Michigan's economy has been estimated by many I have talked to to be 7-10 $billion.. What small advantage the state still holds in its tourism, might surely be lost along with the fragile ecosystem we have fought so hard to protect over the years. This is not the zebra mussel, or the lamprey, or some climate change thing that we have no control over.. It is a preventable disaster.. And it is not a partisan issue.
