A Judge has ordered the striking faculty back to work.  And they will.
Faculty association leaders say members will be back in classrooms Tuesday.

"We will obey the court order and return to work tomorrow," Laura Frey, CMU Faculty Association president, said in a statement. "But this does not end the issue. The faculty remains strong and committed to securing a fair and equitable contract for members."

    That's right you will.

The faculty strike was illegal. Not in the normal civil sense, but that it would have allowed the ultimate response from the administration that would be appropriate. Firing their greedy a$$es.  The use of union tactics against employers must occasionally be squashed, as in this case.  The labor tactics designed to extract all that is takeable from employers does indeed have legal refute. For Michigan taxpayers who support higher education, that is a good thing.

But those workers, all 97% who voted to pursue the action are apparently not without some reservations about their actions.  Seeing the writing on the wall, they rightfully understand that its all over for them in this economy if they were to remain negligent and unmindful of their obligations in order to receive compensation at all.

Nothing like wondering where the next Filet Mignon and red wine dinner will be coming from.

And in this case it is appropriate that the judge called it the way it is.  And he is not the only one.

The Mackinac Center's Paul Kearsey concludes that not accepting the union demands is NOT bad faith bargaining:

"In the real world, sometimes you get to haggle and sometimes you don't. The presence of a union doesn't make economic reality go away, and collective bargaining is not a magic wand that makes big raises affordable year after year after year.

Among other things, the Public Employment Relations Act elevates collective bargaining to a legal right, and the usual practice of collective bargaining is for compromises to be reached over several meetings between unions and employers. Workers have been taught to expect that employers will make concessions during negotiations. Expectations are not rights, but when expectations are not met people sometimes respond in negative ways, like illegal strikes. Among the many questions that the Legislature and governor need to ask is whether or not PERA has elevated government employees' expectations to unreasonable levels."

The bottom line? The faculty can be mindful of current economic conditions that affect us all, can note that their gold plated government sector positions are not only coveted, but are beginning to draw attention as those which might be viewed as overcompensated anyhow by taxpayers.

Or, they take their marbles and go home ...

    permanently.
