Urgent Action Alert: House Republicans Wavering on Critical School Choice Legislation?

Parents across Michigan won a pretty big victory last year when the Republican majority in the state House and Senate successfully passed a package of legislation that expanded educational opportunities for Michigan kids.

The various bills lifted the arbitrary cap on charter schools and empowered parents to pursue the education choices that work best for their kids.  As you probably know, two-thirds of the state's charter schools, most in urban districts like Flint, Grand Rapids, Lansing and - of course - Detroit, have waiting lists a mile long as parents demand more choices and better results for their children.

Despite the major advances and the fact that lawmakers listened to parents late last year, 2012 is an election year and some members of the state House Republican majority are worried about raising the ire of the MEA and their teacher union cronies.

    Keep reading.  (below the fold)

The state Senate sent Senate Bill 619 over to the House.  The bill, sponsored by Sen. Patrick Colbeck and championed by Sen. Phil Pavlov (a couple of real heroes on this issue) was approved by the House Education Committee last week and would lift the arbitrary cap on so-called cyber charter public schools.  The current cap is an astonishingly low TWO and nearly 10,000 kids have applied and been turned away because of the current restrictive law.  These are kids who are being failed at their current schools and parents who desperately want what's best for them.

Of course it was during the course of testimony on this bill that Committee Chairman and RIghtMichigan regular Rep. Tom McMillin was flabbergasted (along with the rest of us) by establishment bureaucrat supreme, Ms. Debbie Squires:

Now, as the House prepares as early as this Wednesday to cast a vote on this critical legislation we're hearing buzz here at RightMichigan headquarters that there are nearly a dozen Republicans who voted for last year's parental empowerment legislation but are now seriously considering siding with Debbie Squires.

Clearly this is unacceptable.  Below the fold is a list of the Republicans who are seriously considering siding with Debbie Squires over parents.  I've also included a copy-and-paste-able list of their email addresses.  PLEASE take a moment to contact each of them, type up a polite email asking them to support parents, support students and to support Senate Bill 619 and then send click SEND.  A little sunlight can go a long way.  Let's remind our Representatives that "the base" is watching and what they do matters!

Please ask these fence-sitters why they agree with Debbie Squires and not Michigan parents?  Ask them why they seem so hell-bent on keeping kids trapped in broken and failing schools in their own districts:

    Rep. Kevin Daley- 82nd District

Rep. Jeff Farrington - 30th District

Rep. Frank Foster - 107th District

Rep. Kurt Heise - 20th District (Heise is in the Education Committee and in a shameful move refused to even vote on the bill last week!)

Rep. Holly Hughes - 91st District

Rep. Nancy Jenkins - 57th District

Rep. Joel Johnson - 97th District

    Rep. Matt Lori- 59th District

Rep. Peter MacGregor - 73rd District

Rep. Ed McBroom - 108th District

Rep. Rick Olson - 55th District (Olson, you may remember, is openly considering a switch to the Democratic Party)

Rep. Peter Pettalia - 106th District

Rep. Bruce Rendon - 103rd District

Rep. Bill Rogers - 66th District

Rep. Sharon Tyler - 78th District

Rep. Dale Zorn - 56th District

    Is it possible (none / 0) (#1)

that these people are acting in this manner because the "titular" head of the MIAGOP, the governor, has proposed in his budget more spending on public education, community colleges, and of course the People's University of Michigan (among all the rest)? I understand that several community colleges are MEA locations.

Not to excuse what these political prostitutes are doing because that probably isn't what a majority of their bosses want, but what is to stop them from playing it safe in the eyes of their in the bag for the unions fuehrer? He probably doesn't have to worry about a RTW bill landing on his desk any time soon or ever.

Why did they pull the video and does the Michigan House Education Committee (or anyone) have a copy of the Squires clip?

The other clips of SB619 are up but (none / 0) (#10)
