"I realize the tragic significance of the atomic bomb ... It is an awful responsibility which has come to us ... We thank God that it has come to us, instead of to our enemies; and we pray that He may guide us to use it in His ways and for His purposes."
    - President Harry S. Truman, August 9, 1945

Difficult to fathom how anyone could be so obstinate that they'd be willing to eat two of those bad boys.  Even more amazing is that one would never know atomic bombs were dropped on Japan, yet 2013 Detroit looks like it just got hit.

Anyhoo, big thank you to the men who saved an unimaginable number of American and Japanese life's over those three days.

    Operation Downfall . . . (5.00 / 1) (#1)
by Kevin Rex Heine on Fri Aug 09, 2013 at 06:33:37 PM EST
. . . was the codename for the Allied plan for the invasion of Japan if Emperor Hirohito had refused to surrender.  The Japanese plan for defeating the invasion was called Operation Ketsugō ("Operation Codename Decisive").  The expected orders of battle for both Operation Olympic and Operation Coronet are daunting, to say the least.

Given that the U. S. Military still hasn't run out of the 500,000 Purple Heart medals that were  manufactured in anticipation of the casualties resulting from the invasion . . . yeah, the revisionist historians can re-spin it any which way they want to and debate it until they're blue in the face, but both Special Mission # 13 and Special Mission # 16 were necessary.
