    Welcome to Scoop!

To help you figure things out, there is a Scoop Admin Guide which can hopefully answer most of your questions.

    Some tips:

    • Most of the layout is changed in "Blocks", found in the admin tools menu
    • Features can be turned on and off, and configured, in "Site Controls" in the admin tools menu
    • Stories have an "edit" link right beside the "Full Story" link on an index page, and right beside the "Post a Comment" link on the full story page. They can also be edited by clicking the story title in the "Story List" admin tool
    • Boxes are what allow you to write new features for Scoop; they require a knowledge of the perl programming language to work with effectively, although you can often make small changes without knowing much perl. If you would like a feature added but cannot program it yourself, ScoopHost does custom Scoop programming as one of its services.
    • If you aren't sure where to look for a particular feature or piece of display, try the "Search Admin Tools" link in the admin tools menu.

    MLIVE Editors Purposefully Lie

    I can't stand condescension.

Especially when its used in the face of an article that begins with a lie

The title "'Filthy homosexuals': Michigan GOP leader Dave Agema's Facebook post sparks furor " SCREAMS out to the casual reader that MI Committeeman Dave Agema made such a statement.  I was amazed he would say such a thing.

    Amazed I tell ya!

Funny..  he never did.  He quoted someone who actually said:

"Part of the homosexual agenda is to get the public to affirm their filthy lifestyle, as one homosexual admitted in the October 1987 homosexual rally on Washington: "We are no longer seeking just a right to privacy and a protection from wrong. We also have a right -- as heterosexual Americans already have -- to see government and society affirm our lives"
    Huh.. so very different.

Yet when challenged, instead of acknowledging the error in reporting, the editorial board for MLIVE simply deletes comments they do not like. I can understand that on someone's personal blog, but this entity presents itself as a news source.  Editor Dave Murrays says:

    "Readers,

Comments, many of them, actually, have been removed for violating the community user rules. We ask that you discuss this topic with civility and respect, without insulting each other or entire groups of people.

-- Dave Murray, Grand Rapids community engagement specialist

Yeah ok Dave.  lets take a look at what got MY comments ALL Deleted.

    Go below the fold.

Pushing the Agenda: Union Pay offs and Detroit Democrats

    (Promoted by Nick...)

In the classic movie Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Jimmy Stewart plays the naive Jefferson Smith, who is appointed a U.S. Senator. Lacking any political experience, he goes to Washington and is rudely confronted by machine politics and a culture of corruption, with other senators, including one of Smith's heroes, passing legislation to pay off their backers.

Here in Michigan, we are either accustomed to this culture or worn down by its relentlessness or simply unable to keep up with it all. As a public service, therefore, let's look at one state representative pushing the agenda for those who are responsible for her election, rather than looking out for the people of her district and the state.

Shanelle Jackson is the representative for the 9th District in northwest Detroit. This is the district in which I grew up. On March 26, Jackson introduced House Bill 4712, which amends the school code by imposing a new requirement if a school is not meeting expectations:

If the school is an elementary school, the superintendent of public instruction shall issue an order requiring that the maximum class size in the school for grades K to 3 shall not exceed 17 pupils per classroom.

There it is -- the payoff to the teacher unions, who advocate for smaller class size so that districts will be forced to hire more unionized teachers. This has nothing to do with student performance, since numerous studies (and just about every Catholic school) have debunked the notion that smaller class size is necessary for improved academic performance.
