Shortly after the surveillance was revealed, Rep. John Conyers, the panel's ranking Democrat, said he feared "that we are on the verge of becoming a surveillance state."

"Over the past decade - under the leadership of four chairman with diverse political views - the members of this committee have vigorously debated the proper balance between our safety and our constitutional right to privacy," Conyers said in remarks prepared for Wednesday's hearing. "We never - at any point during this debate - approved the type of unchecked, sweeping surveillance of United States citizens employed by our government in the name of fighting the war on terrorism."

A recent letter to President Obama looks for the most part like things we have said for years.  That the ACA is deeply flawed legislation which never had the appropriate vetting done, was rushed, and frankly will have negative impacts that were predicted, yet ignored.  James Hoffa writes:

"Dear Leader Reid and Leader Pelosi:

When you and the President sought our support for the Affordable Care Act (ACA), you pledged that if we liked the health plans we have now, we could keep them. Sadly, that promise is under threat. Right now, unless you and the Obama Administration enact an equitable fix, the ACA will shatter not only our hard-earned health benefits, but destroy the foundation of the 40 hour work week that is the backbone of the American middle class.

Like millions of other Americans, our members are front-line workers in the American economy. We have been strong supporters of the notion that all Americans should have access to quality, affordable health care. We have also been strong supporters of you. In campaign after campaign we have put boots on the ground, gone door-to-door to get out the vote, run phone banks and raised money to secure this vision.

Now this vision has come back to haunt us." ..read more

We warned you.  We told you it was a lie.  We advised against such socialist manifestations of public policy, but your boots on the ground guaranteed the demise of your "hard earned benefits".

And there isn't an executive order that would stand a constitutional test even by THIS liberal court which would support a carve out, or fix for this fundamental destruction of our way of life, Mr Hoffa. This president is not a friend to the United States, and the two you write to are fully owned by this corrupt administration.

The question is, will you put boots on the ground to support more of the same or follow through with what appears to be the spark of an epiphany? How many times will you allow the master to kick you.

It is relevant to note that nearly every act by the US Congress has a cost to some particular interest, and that the weight borne is often disproportionate and devastating.  The other day we talked about the effect on the mom and pop internet retailer which is about the have the jack-boot of 40+ states rammed up the backside.  And today I wish to add a reminder of WHY we sent a Republican majority to Congress in 2010.  To abort Obamacare.

A friend in the hinterland relates a discussion held with an employee at a large retailer that has a significant presence in Michigan. The title above uses his descriptive, and is a reasonable way to drive home the value of such legislative measures.  He says:

" I was shopping there this afternoon and struck up a conversation with the gal checking out my groceries.  She was complaining that her hours are going to be cut back from 30 hours per week to 24.  This she said was due to Zero-Care.  By going to 24 hours she would be part-time and as such that Meijers wouldn't have to pay the penalty related to Z-C.  Even though her husband works it is going to be hard for her to pay her bills and make her car payments, according to her.  This sort of thing isn't going to help Zero's popularity rating.  Or will he have to blame it on Bush, the Republican's, hospitals and the pharmaceutical industry, the insurance industry, etc., etc..  Anyone but him and the Democrat majority who passed Zero-Care, right?"

Until "Zero-Care" is defunded, rescinded, and relegated to being merely a bad memory, we will continue to see families suffer. Whether Obama will suffer the consequence still remains to be realized, but the rest of our communities will.
