Jennifer Granholm's husband says women with kids shouldn't run for office

Welcome back to 1919, Mr. First Gentleman.

Absolutely unbelievable.  The chauvinism, hypocrisy and blatant double standard inherent in these statements is absolutely unbelievable.

According to the husband of a sitting, female governor with children ANOTHER sitting, female governor with children should think "about what she's putting her family through" and avoid a run for higher office.

Dan.  Women's suffrage happened a long time ago.   The vote.  Feminism.  Equality.  An end to this sort of sewage.

And your claims that you're only "asking" the question?  That you're only suggesting she think about it?  I'm calling bull.  You opened your vitriolic, personal, mean spirited, waaaaay below the belt attack on the woman with a jab about a third party's myspace page.  Palin is supposed to "think" twice about running because of what some other guy says on a social networking site?

Mulhern's entire attack is simply galling.  And more than that, I think Frank is on the right track towards the end of the segment when he suggests these sexist, anti-woman attacks reveal something about the man's own inner thoughts.   Think this cat resents his wife?

It's either that or chauvinism.  This can't come from any other place.

Mulhern should apologize to Sarah Palin and every woman in the United States for suggesting a woman can't do what men do every day of the week.

Mulhern should apologize to Sarah Palin and every woman in the United States for suggesting that women are inferior to men in their ability to handle complicated family situations.

Mulhern should apologize to Sarah Palin and every woman in the United States for attacking the Governor's children and family.

And frankly, Mulhern should apologize to his wife for running down her ability to govern.

If and when that happens the rest of us will happily welcome him out of the dark ages and into the 21st century.

    Transcript follows...

Daniel Granholm Mulhern:     I wonder if she knows what she is getting into. Jennifer ran when Jack was about a year old. But that was for attorney general in a little state called Michigan its like being a mayor of a small town in Alaska compared to the sweepstakes she is in now.  I would love to hear more from her and especially from her husband to be honest with you. Because she's got a 5 month old down syndrome baby, and a 17 year old daughter who is pregnant now, and what....

Frank Beckmann:       Whose going to have a husband by the way to take care of her.

DM:     Yeah, an 18 year old husband who on MySpace was swearing about how he didn't want to be a dad, and uh you know ....

FB:       So the attacks continue from the democrats we have evidence of it hear from the husband of a governor who's gone through this. I'm surprised to hear you say this I must tell you.

    DM:     Frank

FB:      Your wife has gone through this she has lived this and she has done a terrific job with it, and you don't want to give this woman the chance based on the same conditions.

DM:     Listen Frank you are the one who introduced the kids not me, I'm only talking about the mother's perspective. Now you would be the first one to tell me that stuff that's in the public domain is in the public domain. And that stuff was in the public space that this man who want to exalt as a good dad and I pray that he will be. I pray that he's working is way through it...

FB: Dan, I have not exalted anyone as a good dad. I simply said he was going to be her husband, I don't know if he is going to be a good dad or not.

DM:     Ok, all I'm saying. This girl is going to go through a lot, and all I'm asking Frank is does she know what she is putting her family through. And you know its fascinating ...

FB:      Are you telling me that your wife Jennifer Granholm regrets putting your family through her public service?

DM:    All I'm telling you this is an entirely different situation, Frank.

FB:     No its not, it's the governor of a major state raising children, while doing a job how is that different?

DM:     Well number one our kids were much older, number two we didn't have a teenage pregnant child, number three we didn't have a child, an INFANT with down syndrome. Now I'm not saying they can't do it Frank, I'm not arguing. I'm only asking a question and sharing my perspective, which is why I think you put me on the line. I'm not judging her I'm asking do they know what they are getting into and I would love to hear more from her husband. I'm not judging, I'm not saying he is not going to do it I hope to god he rises to the task for the family.

DM:     You know what Frank I think its really curious that you as a host are playing the advocate role, and I as a caller am really asking questions, that I think are really good questions for all of us. I'll continue to be balanced and non partisan, when John Edwards ran I thought it was crazy, I had the same questions.  He's got kids, his wife's got cancer and they are going to run around the country while they have kids.  When Barack was going to run, I say do you really want to do this Barack, to your family.  Now this situation is, how much further do we push it.  You've had infants, a 5 month old child, neither of us have raised a special needs child. You've had teenage kids, a teenage kid who's pregnant...

FB:       I've got to tell you it sounds if you wish your wife had never gone through the public life like this, I gotta tell you.

    DM:    Not at all.

FB:       Why, deny someone else the opportunity to do that.

    DM:     I'm not doing that.

FB:      It's suggesting that she shouldn't even be Governor now, that your wife could do it, and someone else's can't

DM:     I mean Frank there are 20 leaps of logic as usual on that conclusion.

to Obama and raised the same concerns about John Edwards. Yup, that's proof that he's sexist. Last time I checked, Nick, you've never run for political office or held political office have you? Mr. Mulhern has a bit more insight on this topic that you do. Time to get off your high horse of ignorance.

So, if Palin waited 8 months, it would be perfectly acceptable for her to be the head lawyer for a government that has approximately 10 times more employees than the population of that little town she was mayor of, and to be chief law enforcement officer to a state with around 12 million (at the time) people.

Oh, and to be the highest ranking elected official in her party, and to immediately be out running for higher office.

This, versus the only real duties that are expected of a vice president: breaking Senate ties and attending funerals.

    Yeah, that makes sense.

She's a woman, she's not a democrat, and therefore she is evil and must be destroyed.

Just face up to what your side is doing, submit to it, and own it.

You'll be a much happier person if you do.

...after watching the tape of her speech from yesterday, I'm liking her more than McCain.

And I'm still looking forward to NoviDemocrat to provide a link of Mulhern's Q&A w/Obama.

    It's put-up-or-shut-up time.

ND's track record to date hasn't been anything to write home about.

The First Slug should take a page out the book of Todd Palin. Get a damn real job you jerk. Instead of feeding from the public trough by having an office, staff, car, and funding by the tax payers. Get out there and find a job. Oh, that's right. Because of the feckless way your wife has trashed the economy of this state they might be hard to find. But I am sure somebody could find you something that you are qualified for. There are lots of farmers that could give you a job cleaning barns. That is right up your ally. Shoveling crap seems to be your stock and trade.

    Just a dumb thought . . . (none / 0) (#22)

That I am aware of, no one questioned Joe Biden's ability to serve in the Senate . . . even though his wife and daughter were killed in a car crash just before his taking office . . . even though he commuted from Deleware to DC and back daily, raising his two sons as a single dad for several years.

Nope; that I recall, no one questioned Biden at all.

Now, why . . . exactly . . . is Sarah Palin unfit on this crteria?

Should we send out a search party? (none / 0) (#24)
