The wishes of the finest do gooders in our state will be met. We will have a smoking ban in effect.

The finest representatives were put to the test on this issue and failed.  Somehow, in the test of constitutional understanding, there are few in our political system who could muster even a barely passing D-.  Core beliefs aside even for "conservatives" who found their "pet peeve" to be in stark contrast to principles they had presumably held.  In the end I guess its ok to tell people how to run their business, who may attend it, and now what they can consume while there.

Funny, how the end results of such interference in matters doesn't make the light of day until after its too late..  How convenient..

    As The Ivory Tower ponders:

"Will bars and restaurants have their required "No Smoking" signs posted and ashtrays removed? Will smokers be defiant or even confrontational? Will local health departments be deluged with complaints?

Michigan need look no farther than Ohio, which began its ban three years ago, for answers. "

The article goes into a couple of different responses to the law.  Some benign, while others demonstrate the harsh reality of what the law portends here:

"Our revenues have dropped like a rock -- we're down $10,000 a month," said Fred Krieger, owner of Krieger's Pub in Toledo. "And the majority of that is from the smoking ban."

HUH..  Who could have seen something like that happening?  You mean limiting the activities like smoking in an environment that caters to people who drink.. and smoke hurts the ability of that environment to do business?

Well played smoking Nazis, Well played indeed..

I must admit the cleverness exhibited by those who would eventually control the minutia of your daily actions has been rather successful wouldn't you agree?  In fact as I write this, there are others in the broad media environment penning the success of lobbying efforts to reduce salt in food products that might have once tasted good.

Ahh..  for the good ol days...  A time when people had a somewhat different approach in the way they interacted with others..  A time when people essentially MINDED THEIR OWN BUSINESS.

Really..  The same article also gave us this great quote (OMG! By a tea partier)of defiance:

"Bill Delaney got his first violation on May 4. Since then, he has been issued another 54 tickets at Delaney's Lounge in Toledo.

The 68-year-old, non-smoking, non-drinking Tea Party member hasn't paid a dime and proudly defies the ban, placing big glass ashtrays across the bar and on every table, and even putting a sign in his front window: "This is a smoking establishment."

His bartenders smoke, his waitresses puff away. His customers light up while playing video games.

"I figure I'm up to $7,000 to $10,000 in fines," he said. "We know what it takes to run a business. What are they going to do next, tell me to stop selling Bud Light?"

For the nonsmokers who complain, Delaney has a simple message: "Don't come to my bar. Or take me to court. Giving up is not in my vocabulary."

Good for you Bill.. And I hope you hang in there.

Sadly, I know of some places likely to suffer here in Michigan.

One of them is owned by My Aunt and Uncle in Quanicassee, Michigan.  A marginally profitable operation at best now, and a likely candidate for empty building status very shortly.  So much for the ECONOMIC HEALTH of a few more good Michiganders.  My aunt simply wonders what she will do..

Is it worth fighting the system like Bill is in Ohio?  One wonders..

In the mean time.. as the mom and pop saloons, pubs and other small operations die on the vine that is Michigan public policy, consider these following members of the legislature as opposed to free association, real property ownership, and contrary to the tenets of true liberty unless they have the type of epiphany that brings about a repeal this oppressive government intervention in the manner in which private business operates.

Welcome to the new world order...

Sadly, there are folks on this list who support the justified resistance to mandated health care coverage, but cannot see their own contradictory stance when it comes to letting an owner of a business manage his own affairs with a substance that even after May 1st 6AM, will STILL BE LEGAL TO USE.

In anticipation of an eventual law many owners built outdoor patios to accomodate smokers.  Then they included in the bill patios attached to the building where food and drink is served.  The reason:  so non-smokers can enjoy the patios too.  Well screw that!  I would like to enjoy a cigarette on the INSIDE of the bar!  It is absolutely anti business what they are doing to these owners.  We will be down in Toledo in a couple weeks and I am going to make it a point to visit that bar owner, have a couple drinks and smokes - 100% support to him.

I love me a non-smoking environment, but I think I like my freedom just a wee bit more.

The problem is, of course, that once we allowed the nannystate busybodies to pick up one shred of our health care we allowed them the perfect excuse to control our behaviors.  Elsewhere in this country there have already been attempts made to control the grease in foods, sugars, salt, and other additives.  In addition, there was a law that thankfully failed in Mississippi that would have made it illegal for a restaurant to even serve food to someone deemed obese. I anxiously await the formation of the carb police and the caffeine cops.

To me this isn't so much a debate about smokers versus nonsmokers, but it is a battle between private enterprises and the desire of bureaucrats to control aspects of an individual's right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.

On May 1st this nonsmoker might venture down to the local watering hole and light up a cigarette.  I live on the edge that way.

    I may be a smoker (none / 0) (#4)

but we always respect the voluntary rules of the establishments we go to AND friends and family who are non-smokers.  My husband quit three years ago and rags on me all the time about quitting.  I will, when it is my choice, not anyone elses.  What government is intent on doing is taking our freedom of choice away and then what's next on their agenda.

What will be next - I see Kalifornification is trying to ban Happy Meals now.  See - it is never going to end.  The wimps in our government caved and the flood gates are open!

So let me see if I have this right. (none / 0) (#5)

It is now against the law to use a legal substance in a public place that serves food or alcohol(also a legal substance), but it is totally fine to roll a fat one and light up an illegal substance just as long as you have a note from your doctor.
Someday we can only hope that a cure for the terrible mental disorder known as Liberalism can be found.
