    The Voice of Summer

Whether you played, were a fan or merely knew of the Detroit Tigers, it was unlikely you could hear a Tigers game and not recognize the Voice of Ernie Harwell.

For my entire life, summer has been mixed with the occasional Detroit baseball game in the background while painting, doing yard work, or even during a leisurely drive through the Michigan countryside for no reason.  Win or loss, something could be said for the comforting sound of Harwell's voice during Detroit's rendition of America's pastime.  Perhaps it was the nostalgic feeling of warm breezes from years ago, or maybe just the comfort from knowing things can be the same for such a long time, maybe in a way you wear an old comfortable hat.

Whatever it was, it seems it is time to move on.  the "voice of summer," Ernie Harwell passed away at the age of 92 tonight at his Home in Novi.

God bless and keep him.  Our prayers go out to Lulu, his wife of 68 years.

    A Wonderful Life. (none / 0) (#3)

Today I am grieving like many thousands of my fellow Michigan residents and baseball fans. We have lost a true gentleman and a warm and wonderful human being. So many memories we have of Mr. Harwell. He gave us so many wonderful days and nights of baseball. And he did it with class and a love of the game and of the people to whom he spoke. The people of Michigan returned that love. They embraced a Georgia boy and held him with awe, respect and appreciation. He met the greats of the game, Ruth, DiMaggio,Mantle, Kaline, Cobb and so many others. At the same time he became a great part of the game himself, although his humble demeanor would not really accept that. Today I thank God for the life of Ernie Harwell. His beautiful voice is now stilled forever but the memories we have of him and his simple wonderful way will live with us for years to come. Thanks Ernie, thanks a million. God bless you and keep you and may he hold you in the hollow of his hand.

His voice echoed over the chain link fences in the back yards of suburban Michigan homes in the summer. A calming, measured tone; always civil and accurate. Ernie was the "voice" before cable, cells, computers, or remotes. RIP.
