    My Brother's Keeper

My brother Steve and I used to talk politics..

I have a few of them, (Brothers) but THIS particular brother and I disagreed more often than not on issues of the national political stage, policies, and who might be best for leadership.  Its was a discussion over George Bush in 2003 that had our wives (watching nearby) fearing a fist fight.  Several adult beverages, and a few hours of heated discussion never brought the violence our mates had expected. And we remain as always willing to pick up such discussions, and love each other as brothers do.  Family is good.  Especially family that can disagree to the point where blood pressures are up, yet peace will prevail in the end.

The reason I mention this is twofold; to illustrate that we can have disagreements and still carry on strong family/professional relationships, and to point out that I would still tell a brother where to stick a suggestion that I donate to ANYONE in that freak show called the Democrat party! I might even tell him to wrap it in broken glass and salted tinfoil for good measure first.

And I suspect he would respect that.

    Continued below.

An email from the Schostak campaign today complains of the negativity toward him for his donations to Democrats.  Most would argue that its kind of hard to sell yourself as the leader of a political [partisan] organization if you have a record of supporting 'the other team'.  He explains the Democrat donations this way:

    DONATIONS ATTACK
Allegation (from my opponent's Facebook page): "The current chairman gave personally to Pelosi"

        FACTS
I have not personally donated to any Democrat including Nancy Pelosi. My brothers and I were in business together before I left to serve as chairman. The three of us formed a family PAC which has overwhelmingly donated to Republicans. However, one of my brothers is a Democrat. When I've asked my brothers (even the Democrat) to support Republicans, they never hesitated. When my Democratic brother asked our family PAC to support a Democrat, though it was rare, we obliged.

My opponent ignores the $26 million I raised last cycle, 2012, for Republicans and the thousands of dollars I donated to Republican candidates and Republican/conservative causes. He ignores the $29 million I raised with former-Chairman Ron Weiser in 2010 and thousands of dollars I donated that year. And, my opponent ignores the countless thousands I've donated over the years to the party, candidates and conservative causes.

It's disappointing and displays a clear misunderstanding of campaign finance donations or my opponent is purposely attempting to discredit me with lies.

But he still remained in the 'family PAC' for years.

He did not say to his brother, "Hey Bro! Donate personally, and I will do the same, and see you at thanksgiving".  Bobby Schostak's name over several years and races remains connected with those donations to the Granholms, the Pelosis and others who are plain and simply, "the enemy".    I understand that some Republicans might have donated to family members, though family members, and perhaps even to others based on similar arrangements, but ought there not be a little higher expectation required for a leader of the party?

Perhaps it should be recognized WHY such a PAC exists?  If it is accepted practice to donate to both sides of the fence, then certainly political fence straddling is the rule within their business model.  What does that neutrality mean to a business that it is so important to maintain?  Is it the new reality or old reality that creates such relationships? And how does it translate into the political arena with which we have such a great concern?

We as Republicans are supposed to get Republicans elected, and effect Republican principles.  Presumably those are conservative, and in opposition to the principles held by the 'Frankfort school' professors on the other side.

There is no more room for compromised principles in our leadership.

Adding this to the losses in this last cycle, we can no longer afford the luxury of fighting ourselves in the manifestation of those who play both sides in any way.

I'll close by saying that I don't believe Bobby Schostak considers himself bad for the party.  I recognize the inability to see in oneself the failure brought to an institution. I'll also go as far as saying that I do not believe the "Dele-Gate" fiasco was Bobby's idea.  The 'mastermind' if you will, has already been dealt with.  However, Bobby and Sharon both had an opportunity to correct it before it developed into the full blown mess that it became.

There are folks who find this unforgivable.  They have been waiting for this convention to set things straight and return some level of meaning to what it means to be a Michigan Republican.

    Bottom line?

The reality that this convention could be the end, or perhaps a new beginning for the Michigan Republican Party ought to encourage a little reconsideration from even the strongest Schostak supporters.

    See You At The Convention!

    -------------

For complete context of the email, (presented in an effort to be as open and fair to the process as possible) I have added it in its entirety below:

    Good evening delegates:

Tonight, I held another conference call open to any and all Republicans and grassroots activists throughout Michigan. I truly appreciate everyone who attend. Your engagement, excitement and enthusiasm is overwhelming. I am humbled by the strong support and honest feedback.

Several callers complained about the outlandish and outrageous attacks against me by my opponent -- who literally challenged my loyalty to our party and principles despite dedicating my life each and every day for the last two years to our party.

I've refused to directly address my opponent because I find these attacks to be underhanded, disappointing, and frankly, disgusting. Our party never wins when we rip each other apart.

But, because my opponent has refused to stick to the issues and continues to engage in negative attacks, and refuses to tell others to stop this nonsense here are the facts:

And, my opponent ignores the countless thousands I've donated over the years to the party, candidates and conservative causes.

It's disappointing and displays a clear misunderstanding of campaign finance donations or my opponent is purposely attempting to discredit me with lies.

Those are the facts. I've never ducked a tough question or backed down from a tough fight. I refuse to allow small group of individuals to use misleading facts and out right lies to tarnish my strong conservative credentials that earned me the support from Congressman Amash, Union Conservatives President Terry Bowman and more than 3,000 activists statewide.

Finally, I find it important to state that I strongly discourage my supporters from going negative and ask that they remain positive.

    We are a united party.

We have the best values, we have the best principles, we have the best people and as a result, together, we will have the strongest and most successful results!

Thank you so much for you support, encouragement and for helping fight lies with facts!

    Sincerely,
    Bobby Schostak

can be so close yet so far apart.  My sister is a democrat thru and thru BUT everything she believes in spending, taxes, education, etc. are all in line with a republican.  Her answer to that line of thinking?  I am a democrat, have always been a democrat and will always vote for the democrats.  Don't know why but go figure.

My mother thinks she is the spawn of Joseph Kennedy via her Irish heritage (which is a lie, not a drop of Irish in her).  There may come a time when she needs a lobotomy and then maybe she can claim some street cred as a Kennedy.  She gets tingles up her leg while watching Chris Matthews spittle all over himself, too.

My brother is one of those elitist, do good democrats.  Volunteers at the VA and senior center and never lets you forget it, date night once a week, writes the yearly "look at what I have done all year" Christmas letter, yada yada yada.  Now retired, he volunteers his expertise in helping organizations get federal grants - ya know spending other people's money grants on useless sh!t.

We cannot engage in any conversation regarding politics.  They hate anything conservative, Ronald Reagan was the devil himself, and Boooosh/Cheny were worse than the devil because they took us to war for oil so they could get RICH and not pay any taxes.  I don't/won't/can't even try to talk politics because they are so entrenched in their thinking and refuse to see another point of view and with their hatred of anything conservative it is impossible to have a civil debate.

So I just accept my place as the lone Black Sheep of the family (there were two of us but my dad passed away 7 yrs. ago), keep my mouth shut for the peace it brings and focus my attention on ways to educate others who are not so blinded and drunk on the kool aide.
