Granholm gets her wish: $1.35 BILLION Democrat tax hike ends shutdown

Right around 4:18 this morning, just over 4 hours into the first government shutdown in the history of the state of Michigan, the AP reports applause broke out in the Governor's office at the state Capitol.  The reason for celebration... the Senate Democrats had just picked off a couple GOP votes and joined the Democrat controlled House in approving $1.35 BILLION worth of tax hikes.

The Detroit News offers perhaps the most compact but telling description of the entire affair:

State government is open for business after lawmakers gave Gov. Jennifer Granholm what she wanted this morning to call off a shutdown.

Not that it was easy.  Lieutenant Governor John Cherry had to cast the tie breaking vote to officially move a portion of that massive tax hike onto his boss's desk, but hey, a win is a win.  And make no mistake, the Governor and her allies in the Democrat controlled legislature had a plan to raise your taxes and they were working that plan and they were working it and they were working it and they were working it.  And after shutting down the government for 257 some odd minutes in the dead of an October night they saw that plan come to fruition.

    Read on...

Nine months of trying to stick it to Michigan taxpayers and the Democrats finally got their way.  But what price for a state's soul?  The Associated Press reports this morning:

Michigan already has the nation's highest unemployment rate -- 7.4 percent in August -- and just went through a two-day strike involving the United Auto Workers and General Motors Corp. Disrupting services from state parks to road construction risked further upsetting an already unsettled public.

But Boyd said the months-long debate over Michigan's new budget is about defining the state's future...

And about that she is absolutely right.  This massive Democrat tax hike does indeed define Michigan's future and it ain't pretty.  Not only does it steal $1,350,000,000.00 from the pockets of working moms and dads across the state but it takes $1,350,000,000.00 out of the private sector... out of the economy.

We're the only state to lose jobs over the last four years, the only state to lose jobs last year, the only state to lose jobs thus far this year with the highest unemployment rate since the nation finally shook off it's Jimmy Carter fatigue, almost twice the national average.  And the Democrats in Lansing are breaking out in applause after successfully pushing the state into it's first ever government shutdown before riding the votes of the Democrat legislative majority to a job killing tax hike the likes of which we haven't seen in twenty-four years.

    The DetNews reports:

House Republican Leader Craig DeRoche of Novi called the tax hikes "a victory of the bureaucracy and special interests and a loss for families struggling to makes ends meet. This is one of the largest spending sprees in Michigan history."

And here's the dirty little secret.  Next year... they're coming back for more.  Sure, there were a few cursory reforms approved late last night.  The GOP managed to work a good sized MESSA reform out of the entire affair but if you're looking for substantive structural spending cuts and reforms, well, write me when you find them.  And if you come across the Holy Grail or the Ark of the Covenant anywhere along the way make sure you let me know about those too.

The Democrat solution to Michigan's fiscal crisis was a massive Democrat tax hike.  A one-time fix for a chronic budget imbalance.  And when you take $1.35 billion out of the local economy to feed the bureaucracy monster guess what... you're not going to be kick-starting the job market.

The FREEP offers this from the Senate:

In the end, (Senate Majority Leader Mike) Bishop said, Granholm and Democrats who control the House were able to flex their political will for the tax increases.

And men and women struggling to make ends meet from one corner of the state to the next are waking up this morning to the cold, dark reality that Lansing worries more about feeding their own bloated bureaucracy than it does about the ability of Michigan moms and dads to feed their families.

But we shouldn't be surprised.  Governor Granholm told us in her State of the State address that she wanted to raise taxes by $2 billion.  Suppose we should count our blessings that the Democrats only managed to ram through $1.35 billion.

I know it kills you to admit it but none of this would have happened without Republican votes, especially in the Senate. Republicans control the Senate and it was Republican votes in the House and Senate that helped most of the bills to pass.

I just heard on WJR that the service tax includes a tax on financial advisors.
We have been transferred out of state.  Was going to leave our financial advisor with our accounts.  No more.  That's leaving Mihigan as well.
    How sad.

    Revenue Impact (none / 0) (#6)

It will be intersting to see what the actual impact to the revenue is from the rate-hike and new taxes.

I will predict that the dhimmis will blame next years' inevitable budget crunch on the "reforms."

I also suspect that the impact of the rate hike will be a reduction in revenue produced from income taxes.

$600 million from one tax, and 1.2 billion from another... and it doesn't happen...

We're all going to crowd around NoviDem and say "it didn't work, did it!", like he doesn't about the tax cuts he's always claiming didn't work.

Sorry, NoviDem & CommieGuru.  Even though you say "The tax increase is the right thing", your Governor Two-Penny will be giving tax breaks and tax abatements to companies to get them to move here.  If it's really the "right thing" to raise taxes, then she shouldn't need to give tax abatements and tax cuts to certain businesses.

If you can, please provide the list of RINOs in the Senate who caved and voted in favor of this confiscation of our income.  I believe you said there were none in the House.  Is that correct?

    Thanks.

    MESSA Vote (none / 0) (#11)

Nick, do you have the roll call vote for MESSA reform? I have the others, but not this one. Thanks.

The sales tax increase passed 19-19 with Lt Gov. John Cherry being the tiebreaker. All Democrats supported the tax increase outside of Glenn Anderson who is in a swing district. All Republicans opposed it outside of Ron Jelinek, Valde Garcia, and Wayne Kuipers.

The Income Tax passed the senate. All Democrats voted for that except Anderson and Dennis Olshove. All Republicans voted against except Jelinek, Gerald Van Woerkom, Patricia Birkolz, and Tom George.

The House passed the Income Tax increase. All Democrats voted yes except Martin Griffin, Michael Simpson, and Lisa Wojno. All Republicans voted no except Ed Gaffney and Chris Ward.

The House also passed the sales tax increase. No Republican voted for that, and all democrats supported that except Kate Ebli and Marc Corriveau.

There were two votes to pass the Democrats' tax-hike package.  In the House on two votes you wound up having all 58 Democrats vote YES and has Chris Ward and Ed Gaffney each voting YES on one of the two (the same one).

In the Senate you had 16 of the 17 Democrats plus LG Cherry (so 17 of 18) voting YES on both tax hikes and between the two votes you had Patricia Birkholz, Valde Garcia, Tom George, Ron Jelenik, Wayne Kuipers and Gerald VanWoerkom selling taxpayers up the creek.

He always seemed like such a strong Republican.  Such a shame when people of principle cave to whatever promises Granholm pulled for them.

that none of this would have passed without Republican votes. Republicans controlled the Senate but they chose not to follow Leon and Saul.

    I'm so confused... (none / 0) (#17)

    Jennifer Stabenow...Debbie Clinton...Hillery Granholm...wait I'm so confused...

Ok, I back now. Western Michigan is confused about its identity. I'm from the "dark side of the state" so I was on the out side looking in. Wow! People actually have great attitudes here...but how do we think?

I was actually told "Stabenow was at our church and I think she will do a great job". Church...implies he (Holland Michigan)is a Christian. Not against the law...yet? Whats Debbie's position on the University of Michigan and foot baths? You say you don't know? How come, you voted for her. Michigan Constitution Article IX section 4. Oh! Did I miss read?

Why did you vote for the person you did? How will they spend tax dollars? Will they spend tax dollars according to Law? You don't care about that stuff so its no issue? Oh! What Bill did in the oval office have nothing to do with being President? Personal ethics have no bearing in public life? Oh!

Ethics have every thing to do with public life. The news media drives public opinion and thinking. If you don't believe that your head is buried in the sand. So why exactly did we get a tax hike? Federal, State, its all the same thing. Our people in D.C. came from where again? Who voted them into office? We did.

    Wow...that takes me back... (none / 0) (#26)

The huge uaw union strikes and base ball bats. A regular trip down memory lane! After I graduated from college I was lucky enough to work along side the cwa... As I recall I was threatened with being on the receiving end of a base ball bat. Sabotage threats against private property.

Ya, I have very found memories of life on the other side of this great state!

Hey, thanks for helping me to remember!
